My brother is now into James Brown and other 70's funk music. He is in another state, and I don't know what he already has (although I do know he has a lot of James Brown). I am looking for suggestions about really good groovin' funk music that would be similar. He is not a musician, so amazing chops (ala Victor Wooten) are not as impressive to him as a great groove. I would prefer to get suggestions that aren't as popular, so that he won't already have them, but if there are some good popular discs that are must haves, let me know as well, as I may decide to round out my collection a bit.
Thanks! |

Parliament recommendations: "Up For The Down Stroke," "Chocolate City," "Mothership Connection," and "Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome." After he's absorbed those, he can check out the rest of the catalog. All but the last couple of albums (80s era) are pretty consistent and VERY funky. The first two (self-titled and "Free Your Mind ... ") are a little more psychedelic than the later stuff.
Funkadelic recommendations: "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On," "Cosmic Slop," "Tales Of Kidd Funkadelic" and "Let's Take It To The Stage." Again, after that, check out the rest.
Bootsy Collins (or Bootsy's Rubber Band) is another good bet, seeing as he was Brown's bassist for much of the groundbreaking 70s stuff. The albums "Ahhh ... The Name Is Bootsy Baby" and "Player Of The Year" are my favorites, but they're all worth checking out if you're into that kind of thing. |

Betty Davis, former wife of Miles Davis. There's a great compilation record called "Funky 16 corners" on Stone's Throw records. The Meters! Lots of good stuff to choose from........ |

Out of stock here but this site is a goldmine for 70's funk releases: http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?...3Bformat%3Dall |

My personal favs are (in no particular order): P-Funk, Isley Brothers, Brothers Johnson, Stevie Wonder (the older stuff is excellent), early Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield (Superfly soundtrack), Marvin Gaye, Ohio Players, etc. There's just to much there to list. Go onto iTunes and look some of this stuff up to hear some examples.
You might even go out on a limb and get him some Headhunters. |

| | | | Speaking of funk... I was recently turned on to 70's brazilian funk and man, oh man !. Those cats were putting it down back then. Musically it was far better than what I expected, so much so that I picked up 5 compilation cd's from the dj that turned me on to the music. The bass playing is really excellent too. A lot of funky, creative, original bass lines. |
