I saw the video of this recording a long time ago and it's now available on video and on CD. So, who's got it? Who's getting it, what's the good word? Jeff Berlin alone is a good reason for a bass player to want it, but Bruford and Holdsworth make the cup run over!
With a cover like this, it's like it was made for bass players!

I haven't heard any studio versions of the songs she sings on so I can't tell if I don't like the vocalist or she was having an off night. I'd say it's worth buying though. |

Great song choices and great playing by everyone, and Berlin seems to be playing for the music as opposed to his usual showboating. Bruford just kicks things along with even more teeth than on record, Dave Stewart's keyboard wirk is colorful and tasty as can be (and I liked that trick of using fishing weights to hold down organ chords while he does other stuff), and of course, Allan Holdsworth was just layin' it down in his serpentine melodic fashion!
Only two gripes:
1) Annette Peacock, flat lifeless vocals
2) The director of photography was not very on the ball with calling camera shots and focusing on players at critical moments.

Haha... I have a friend like you. I didn't think there was another like him on the planet. Though he is a drummer, so his musical taste is odd anyway. lol...
Yeah, it's nice to have video footage of that classic lineup. The camera work isn't the greatest, but it's well worth owning. At least for me it is. |

The version of 5G they did there is better than the one off "One Of a Kind", which is itself amazing! I just dig the extra chords on the keys during the live version, very nice!
Yeah, it's Jeff Berlin, but not as we know it, which is a shame. I would have liked it if he was allowed to do a little more of his "bandleader" type playing with Bruford. Still excellent though, but I haven't heard a track with the vocals, so I can't comment on that! |

On that album, Holdsworth is gone and Jeff has literally the most prominent voice. He even sings lead on a couple of tunes. Also GGT has another Jeff Berlin classic - Joe Frazier.

Still, the band will have to work hard to come up with a tune better than Hell's Bells!
Right now I have "Champion" by Jeff Berlin and Vox Humana coming to me in the post, I am very excited about this one! |
