Can somebody help me fix this bass tone?

So this is the second time we've recorded with this guy and last time he was brilliant, really good quality recording.

This time though it seemed like he has other things on his mind and he wasn't concentrating right on what he was doing and all of our tones suffered. We're going to come back to him with a list of things we're not happy about (we paid for this ****) and I need some help describing how to improve the bass tone.

(I'd like to stress once again that this is still rough) but if anyone has any comments on the playing quality/tightness that would be great too.

Maaaybe its my headfones.. but it seems like the drums are really loud..or..full ..compared to guitars. it seems like the bass tone suffered most (maybe im biased ). bass sounds ..thin to me.
other than that it sounds...busy.. kinda hard to tell.

The guitars will fill in once the bass gets pulled up. It's like he forgot to mix that track!

Option 2: High pass filter on the bass track set way too high...

Add some upper bass around 80-100hz and some low mids around 250-300hz. As much as I hate it, you mght want to put some compression on it, too.

Your band should review what you're playing on the verse of Crocodile Tears. It's a mess in terms of rhythm from what otherwise sounds like capable musicians.[/unsolicited advice]

In terms of where you're at in the mix, you've got a very dark sounding guitar, and a drummer who's heavy on his kicks. That doesn't leave a lot of room for the traditional "bass" frequencies. Your tone is thin because the only thing that is "cutting through" are your high mids. This is the danger of "scooping" your mids. Get a parametric equalizer and figure out where the guitars aren't in the 80-1Khz range. Bump that band. I second the recommendation on compression as well.

You may need to adjust the frequencies of the guitars to leave room for you. Like I said, they're pretty dark.

You're absolutely right, the bass in the verses just confuses the rhythm a bit, it works better when the bass is more settled in the mix but I'm just going to simplify it to do what the guitar is doing and then keep the original bit in the break after the first chorus. A while ago we started the song with the bass you can hear after the first chorus and it sounded a bit better but while we were recording we decided to cut that little intro which makes it sound a little bit odd.

(the advice confirmed what I had been thinking)

I'll try getting him to do those EQ changes, I'm extremely disappointed with how it turned out.
