It was called "soul" music back in the day, but it was really R&B at its best. Artists like Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, Salomon Burke, Sam & Dave, Booker T & the MGs, Jr Walker and the All Stars, JJ Jackson, Johnny Taylor, Tyrone Davis, Ike Turner, the list goes on. There is a lot of cross over between blues and R&B as well. Good for you for expanding your horizons.

For jazz, soul, and R&B, I would start with stuff like Stanley Clarke, Weather Report, and John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny (I especially like "Metheny-Mehldau"), and of course, anything by Louis Armstrong.
Also, you might want to check out the funk groups like Parliament, Average White Band, James Brown, Rick James, Wild Cherry, and Tower of Power. |

There a loads of sets like that around from the various labels known for specializing in blues, jazz, etc. That's an excellent way to get started. In every set there will be a few tunes that stick out as favorites and you can go on from there to see what else those artists have to offer.
35x35 is just one example. http://www.amazon.com/Alligator-Reco.../dp/B000EGDMY6 |
