I don't do a lot of funk/fusion type stuff, but just off the top of my head I'd like to recommend an album that probably won't come up otherwise...
'Tinderbox' by Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Budgie's work on this album was pretty revelatory to me, he just approaches it from an unusual perspective. It made me think about composing rhythms and working outside the typical cliches. It's not about mindbending chops, but more a tasteful approach to utilizing the drums in very stylistic way- I don't know if I've heard anything since that was quite that idiosyncratic.
Now I better go back and listen to it again, and make sure that's the album I think it is... |
