No bassist in the world could have saved Metallica after Justice, IMHO. I give him props for joining Voivod, but at the same time it seems a bit like a pet project of his, to ressurect a once-great band. Tone (seriously, if you are frikkin paid to play arenas, you darn well better at least have good tone) and talent is only part of it, you need vision to remain relevant, and I think the last Voivod album leaves a lot to be desired in this area. Otherwise its all spilt milk. How many years did he stay with them? He should have left loooong ago if he was so stiffled.

You do know that the guitarist from Voivod died, right? He just happened to have already recorded the new guitar parts to his laptop through protools, and right before he died he gave the band the access codes so they could complete the album. You know that, right? Just saying, they did the best with what they had to work with.

To correct myself: I was thinking more of the self-titled album than Katorz (which as you pointed out, only gave them so much to work with). I have always really liked Voivod (though they kinda lost me after Nothingface); the Nothingface tour (with Soundgarden) was one of the best rock concerts of my youth. Maybe I am just a n00b, and never really saw Newsted as creative force to be recconed with. If I am wrong, this seems to be the perfect situation now for that to come through, and I am curious about what the next album will sound like.
(sorry this should have have been my first post).

I didn't like Voivod's albums with Jason as much, they simplified, which I can dig sort of, but their proggier stuff was amazing.

Killer tone though, and RIP to Piggy, one of metal's most creative guitarists... this video doesn't display it as much, but he had a twisted view of metal guitar, and played like no one else. Great band.

never thought jason newstead was a force to be reckoned with in the world of bass guitar.
