Chevelle - Hats Off To The Bull

Great album overall, IMO. I've always been a big fan even going back to Point #1 and with Evil Joe Baressi at the helm, they've come a long way with this one I think. Easily their best since "This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In)". Plus the production, mixing and tones are flat out amazing.

Wonder what Dean was using in the studio this time around to track. I know he's got some custom Gibby T-Birds for live but have seen him record with all kinds of stuff. Bass on every track sounds phenominal, but that's what you get with a 3 piece and needing to fill up all that space sonically!

Yeah Dean really stepped his game up this time around. I've always been a bigger fan of Joe's tone (love Stingrays in general), but Dean seemed to get a lot more awesome.

This might be my new favorite album. It's really early to tell, but they really raised the bar. Pete's vocal's and even lyrics took huge strides. I think my favorites are probably Pinata and Envy right now.

I'm totally digging on Same Old Trip, Pinata, title track, and Clones right now.

Face to the Floor rules as well, but I had the mp3 of that from months ago so I've kinda already killed it. lol.

Yeah me too haha. I saw them play it live when they toured with Bush a couple months back and it was really awesome live.

Also, what's going on in Revenge? People have said that supposedly Dean and Pete switched instruments for that song. But sometimes I can't tell if that lead instrument is guitar or bass. Sometimes it just sounds a guitar, other times it reminds me more of like Justin Chancellor's tone.

Thanks for the heads up! I really dig this band, despite not normally doing the hard rock thing. This sounds good!

That's an interesting one for sure. It wouldn't surprise me if they swapped though. Chevelle AFAIK only plays in dropped tuning (C#, B, Bb) so really Pete would have no issues on bass and Dean on those beautiful custom baritone PRS'... So awesome.

The bass tone is definitely more like JC's on this album, but remember Evil Joe does Tool's stuff too (or at least the engineering on 10,000 Days) so not much of a stretch.

Hell I know if I went into the studio w/ the guy who tracked JC I would be all about copping his tone! Dean definitely has more mids and thickness though.

Oh definitely. I read in an interview once that Pete pretty much wrote all of Joe's bass parts and Joe learned them in the studio. To me, An Evening With el Diablo really sounds like a Pete riff more than a Joe, but hey who knows. Either way Pete could definitely pull the bass off.

Yeah how awesome is that! I think Evil Joe is doing Tool's next album too, and with the way that Hats Off came out, I'm looking forward to that more than I was before (which was already a lot) haha.

My real only complaint with this album is that the artwork is pretty lackluster. I got the autographed version, and my booklet is like...it's like the printer was misaligned. The bottom copyright info on the back is slightly cut off. Weird.

Oh, and that Glimpse of the Con wasn't included in the album. It's on Youtube if you haven't heard it. Slower and 90s sounding, but it's a solid song.

These guys were on Jimmy Kimmel last night. I'm not a huge fan, but they sounded really good. Better than a lot of bands I see on late night talk shows.

I liked both both Vena Sera and SFC as well but this is the first since Dean has been in the band that it's a "play through" record if that makes sense.

I DVR'd but haven't watched it yet.

To be honest, I saw them on Ozzfest in 2003. It was flat out horrible. They stood there, Pete's vox were awful, no energy, etc.. I liked their albums after but never gave them another shot live.

I saw them on the Carnival of Madness tour last fall and holy CRAP did they do a total 180. The biggest thing is having Dean be able to do "dual lead" vox in a live setting. Pete isn't always on top of his game when it comes to vox live, so Dean being a very strong BGV guy has helped them a lot, IMO.

Kimmel puts the videos on YouTube. FttF was good (I saw it better live) but the second song sounded even better (they played Same Old Trip after).

Dean didn't start off as good as he was doing vocals. The first show I saw I wasn't that impressed. He was a drummer before joining Chevelle. He's continuously impressing me.

Ya was watching it now... FttF was alright but still pretty godo.
I haven't seen Same Old Trip (My personal fave of the record) uploaded yet so will keep watching.

I remember in an interview him saying he was a drumtard but yeah at least on the records he's grown a ton. Doesn't hurt that Sam is just perfect for that band either!
