Question Chris Squire/ Geddy Lee inspired bass lines in my brand new Song & vid. Feedback?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just finished a brand new song, bass lines inspired by some of my favorite melodic/ prog bassists.

My eyes was on following the melody, without jumping out front of the guitars too much...

‪Song for Squirrels video HD‬‏ - YouTube

1991 Yamaha RBX 1000
elixir strings
run direct through Grace pre-amp
medium gauge pick

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Cool song! I like the guitar sound and feel, and the overall arrangement.

IMO the drums should come way up in the mix, unless you were going for having them as a more ambient feel. I'm a drums-to-the-front kind of guy though. The bass sounds a bit undefined to me, kind of "cloudy"...I realize that's not a terribly helpful term, but I don't think muddy describes it. Certainly if you're going for any type of tone similar to the influences you listed (and hey, maybe you're not trying to), you'll need to bring out some mids and high end in the bass.

Ha! Awesome!
gscroggin- I think that the bass sound works for this song. It's mellow like the voice and all the other instruments. The OP got his inspiration from the bass lines not the tone of Squire and Geddy- correct me if I'm wrong OP.

it sounds like melodic shoegazing music. I will say it could be neat if the drums could have a constant crescendo in volume throughout the whole song.

Not a big fan of squirrels - they eat holes in my trash cans and I swear they are plotting against me.

But well done! I like the song....

actually 2 things I think could be improved upon:
1) the dance beat intro- it seems incongruent with the rest of the song. Maybe try to do a similar intro with the bass and guitar instead?
2) seeing your bare foot on the PK5. LOL

I never finish listening to youtube links.

Yours was different. I listened to the whole thing twice, and sent a link to a friend of mine. Not too heavy, not too busy, and very tasteful.

Wonderful.

Wow. Thank you guys all very much for the kind and constructive words, I will try some of these ideas along with a fresh mix, maybe add a little compression and definition to the bass track. Hachi, I'm glad you liked it, here are some links to other tracks/projects:

Very nice! I really liked the lyrics, guitar and bass lines.

IMUO (In My Useless Opinion) you need better drums. Sounds like a Roland drum machine from the '80s. Or at least turn them up.
