i've even temporarily gone back to my fretted to practice some of the weird rhythms they come up with

the theory behind it is pretty simple, mostly just octaves and fifths, but damn, the rhythm is killing me.

any tips?

Opeth have an incredible grasp of syncopation, but much of it uses the same patterns. Work on qunint and sept tuplets. Many of their riffs use these and once you crack them you start to see things a lot more clearly.

I was just listenting to Deliverance a bit ago, great stuff.

Are you sure it's not just "plie-drivingly heavy"!!??

PS wouldn't a Llama's Rage, be a bit like : "being savaged by a sheep" ...?

February news
Quote:
Opeth will be entering Fashination street studios on March 15 to record their 8th yet untitled opus. The band are currently in rehearsal mode, which is a rare occasion having recorded the last 4 records without rehearsing. The recording will be overseen by the uprising recording mogul Jens Bogren. As of today no names for production duties have surfaced and it looks like the next record will be a band produced effort. Nothing has been decided regarding who's taking care of the mix either so we'll have to keep you wondering.

Opeth and their management have spent the last month meeting the 5 top label candidates for the next Opeth recording contract. The names are still secret but a decision will be made very soon and obviously announced here earlier than anywhere else.

Several Summer festival appearances have been confirmed and will be posted here soon. A Summer tour of the US has also been confirmed and will be posted here soon as well. The matters are still very "hush, hush" so we can't say anything more at this point. What can be said is that the band will make a few low-profile apperances prior to the next release and several full blown headline tours all over the world after the release. Take your rest now!

"Per Wiberg [keyboards] has now officially joined OPETH as a permanent member of the band. As most of you know he's been touring with OPETH since their 'Damnation' record. SPIRITUAL BEGGARS fans should not despair as he will continue playing and recording with them.

"The band is currently hard at work in Fascination Street studios [in Örebro, Sweden]. Nine titles have been recorded and at this moment Hammond organs and Mellotrons are being put down to tape. The recording is being supervised and engineered by Jens Bogren and produced by the band. Some song titles have been confirmed and will be posted here soon.

"Several North American journalists will visit the studio in mid-May for interviews and exclusive listening sessions.

"We will soon confirm a handful of Scandinavian and European dates. The band will do a smaller trek round the key cities in Europe in September. This will be the first tour in support of the new album which is supposed to be released in late August/early September. More tour dates to come....

"Have you forgotten...sorry for taking so much time...but: We will soon confirm the winner of the drawing contest too. There have been hundreds of pictures sent in and we thank you for these. The winner will get the task of drawing the band picture for the next OPETH CD.

"Record label??? OPETH have decided which label to sign to and the contracts are being done as you read. We will announce it here shortly!"

As BLABBERMOUTH.NET first reported on April 18, OPETH are believed to be on the verge of inking a new record deal with Roadrunner Records. The band were previously signed to the now-defunct British label Music For Nations Records.

OPETH will take part in the inaugural Sounds of the Underground tour, which is slated to kick off June 25 in Lowell, Massachusetts. Other bands scheduled to take part in the trek include CLUTCH, LAMB OF GOD, GWAR, POISON THE WELL, FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES, UNEARTH, EVERY TIME I DIE, CHIMAIRA, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, MADBALL and DEVILDRIVER

one of the coolest things to remember about the Opeth rhythmsection is that both the drummer and bassist are from Uruguay and have been playing both metal and tradtional latin music as a team for YEARS!!!

many of the cool grroves they do are latin rhythms that have been put in 7 or 5.

killer group!!!
