Chromatic Fantasy...

I've been looking at this piece in a Jaco scores book I have and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this piece? Has anyone here actually been able to play ANY of this? The piece given in the book is, according to the author anyway, the only piece playable on an electric bass.

The piece is Johann Sebastian Bach's "Chromatische Fantasie und Fuge", written for harpsichord and transcribed by Jaco Pastorius for bass. The recorded version is on his album "Word of Mouth."
Here's an informal clip of him messing around with it:

It's a hard piece to play...watching Jaco makes my fingers hurt.

I have just started to learn it.
That's difficult but not as much as you might expect initially.
Most of the real difficulties are at the beginning (wide chords...)
What is incredible is the tempo.
You'll find several covers of it on YouTube.
IMHO: it is better to have a very thin neck to play this tune.

I used to play it, I would pratctice it on a pbass first, then on my jazz it was easier (not easy though).
I've also learned it on the piano, and the other part of the sheet is not playable on bass guitar.
the "first part" is the only one playable on bass.
learn it very slow first and then build up your tempo.
I used to play it very slowly up to jaco's tempo to warm up my fingers.
but speed is not that important (except if you want to play it like jaco did)
it's a wonderful piece of music and the important thing is the way you interpret it.
you can decide to play some part fast, some slow, play it as if the sheet is yours.
hope this helps.
