Cissy Strut + Cold Duck Time - live jazz funk tunes

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey peeps

Just wanted to share a couple of live tunes from my jazz funk gig last night with my band Groove Digger - it's a nice vibey band and we're just getting back into gigging more - anyhoo...

Cissy Strut features a little drum and bass duelling madness towards the end and Cold Duck Time is really uptemp and features our singer Julia - hope you dig the vibes.

Cissy Strut

Cold Duck Time

Let me know what you think

Thanks for listening

Mike

when i saw a reference to the meters in the title, i had to come check it out, one of my fav bands of all time.

first off, the drummer in this recording is great, I would really really dig jamming with a drummer like this, wow.

Real good take on it, guitar, bass, everything.

I personally consider this one of my fav meters tracks, so it was real nice seeing somebody cover this.

nicely done with the little improv jam at the end,.

I've been lucky enough to get to cover Cissy Strut in just about every band that I've ever been in. Great tune that gets the butts moving and at the end you can just jam out in C and let it all hang out.

nice chops man, but I cant tell if the sax player is soloing over your bass solo or the other way around. In my band we have a strict policy of one soloist at a time.

Thanks man - sadly it's not my solo it's just me over playing... a little too much I think - I even said to myself before the gig "keep it tidy tonight, not too many notes", oh well! The drummer Saleem is briiant tho and a real pleasure to play with. Thanks for listening to this guys I appreciate the feedback.

I really enjoyed Cissy Strut - solid groove there! Sounds like fun too!
But I think Cold Duck Time is quite cluttered. As bluesblaster pointed out, there's just too many notes - especially when the vocals come in! I can realte to stretching out during another muso's solo, but during a vocal chorus you take it down a notch IMO and experience. Groovewise, I also noticed that you are mainly emphasising downbeats in the A section, while the tune itself is centered around off beat accents. This doesn't jell right to my ears. It's a cool groove, but I just don't hear it as truly fitting the composition.

Absolutely I agree - I didn't really feel like I got the right groove for that tune and ended up trying too many other options out - but that's why it's good to record these 'heat of the moment' playing moments to hear what was actually going on...! Like I said I really wanted to focus on the pocket more but found myself getting a bit too wild at times - anyway really glad you enjoyed the Cissy strut thing - that's more the way I wanted to be grooving!

Thanks again for checking this out - hopefully be getting out and playing some jazz soon as well - been too long since I did a jazz gig - damn!
