Classic, "Must-Know" Bass Lines - Playlist Recs

Sign in to disble this ad
So I learned to play bass after joining an all-originals band, and I've never actually learned to play any covers or anything... and I recently bought an Amplug so I can play along to mp3's, but I need recommendations of what songs to add to the playlist. I'm basically looking for any classic, famous, or little known but amazing bass lines... from any genre, motown, rock, metal, blues, country, hip-hop, etc...

So far I have:

Muse - Hysteria
John Mellencamp - Wild Night
Four Tops - Reach Out
Temptations - My Girl
Sublime - April 26, 1992
Van Halen - Running with the Devil

What else should I add?

Just off the top of my head & in no particular order...

Politician, Sunshine Of Your Love, White Room - Cream
Addicted To Love - Robert Palmer
Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett (better yet, get a good Stax/Atlantic soul sampler & just learn it)
Bernadette - The Four Tops (see above but make it a Motown sampler)
I Feel Good - James Brown
Rock Me Baby
Roadhouse Blues
Life In The Fast Lane, Rocky Mountain Way, Hotel California - Joe Walsh/The Eagles
Led Zeppelin II - learn the whole album
Made In Japan - Deep Purple (as LZ II)
Foghat Live (ditto)
Caught In The Act - Grand Funk Railroad (as above)
Live At The Fillmore - The Allman Brothers (same)
Almost anything by Little Feat (e.g. Rock & Roll Doctor & Let It Roll)
The Boys Are Back In Town, Dancing In The Moonlight, Don't Believe A Word - Thin Lizzy
Paranoid, Children Of The Grave, Symptom Of The Universe, N.I.B - Black Sabbath (We Sold Our Souls For Rock 'n' Roll is a great sampler)
Fool For Your Loving - Whitesnake (or just pick up 'Live In The Heart Of The City' & get on with it)
Led Boots & Since We've Ended As Lovers - Jeff Beck.
Bluesbreakers & A Hard Road - John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (Clapton & Peter Green respectively)
21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson.
Highway To Hell & Back In Black - AC/DC
Live - Status Quo (the 1974 one)

That'll do from me.

Assuming you'll also be looking on Youtube for ideas, play the Sidebar Game. Look down the list on the right & take a random punt on a tune, repeat several times. You can fall over some remarkable stuff that way.

Pete.

Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison

Wild Nights - Van Morrison rather than John Cougar

Rio - Duran Duran

Money - Pink Floyd

Brick House - Commodores

Come Together - Beatles

Tax Man - Beatles

Another one bites the dust - Queen
