Clatter - Limelight on 12 string!

Dammit, Amy....I'm so torn. I don't know whether to love her or hate her.

Linky!

Nice.

She definitely has a deeper singing voice than Geddy.

That is cool. I remember playing a Schecter 8 string through a Berg NV610 and a Trace V8 at Tom Bowlus' place. That was heavenly. This vid just makes me want that rig all the more!

Can't say I like her singing, but MAN it takes balls to tackle that tune on a 12ver. Wow.

Kudos to her for having the guts to take that on, and even cover it well.

I have a 12ver, and I can only compare playing it to running in sand...I love it, but my God is it a freakin' albatross to play...

Who the hell is she?

I like that and I hate most butchered Rush covers.

Pretty cool.

That's a duo named "Clatter"; Amy used to be a regular on one of the bass forums (Can't remember where, now). Their website is http://clatter.com

While it might not be to your taste, it definitely isn't 'awful'; those kids are quite proficient at their instruments and have created a niche for themselves that works.

...don't get me wrong.
I like the song, but that rendition is really painful,I think.
But not relevant enough to hate.

Joe & Amy make some pretty damn good music, and are really nice people to boot. Personally, I like their cover of Limelight, but enjoy their original music more.

Pushing the envelope ?
Yes,absolutely, but I'd rather hear challenging originals than bad cover versions.
Plus...how is playing someone elses' song, pushing any envelope?

Hmm - I'd rather hear great songs than 'challenging originals'. Err, now that I think about it, I can't think of anything Rush ever did that I think is a 'great song', but neither can I think of anything described as a 'challenging original' that I would generally consider to be 'musical'. So it all works out.

As far as 'playing someone else's song song pushing any envelope', I'd strongly suggest that you hear Vic Wooten's solo version of "Night in Tunisia". Then find a copy of Chaka Kahn's "Night In Tunisia". For that matter, on the first Brian Bromberg record I ever bought (an LP), his version of "Summertime" really opened my ears. Remember that half of the first Beatles album were covers. Probably that much of the first Rolling Stones album were covers. Most of Humble Pie's "Rockin' The Fillmore (and all the good tunes) were covers. And you know what? These bands made those songs their own, just like good musicians and singers have always done (well, until recently, when folks decided that being in a band meant writing their own songs). Listen to Ella Fitzgerald's "How High The Moon" from her Live in Berlin Album, and tell me again that Ella didn't push any boundaries with her version - Ella made it an Ella Fitzgerald performance.

I may be wrong, though - cnltb, got a link to some of your original music?

I wish I did, but I guess, "challenging" may not be the best word to have used in this context.
Having said that, we seem to be on the best way towards the "define that word..." game.
On the other hand, I would never ever through chaka kahn or wooten and bromberg and especially not ella fitz gerald into the same pot as Clatter, who this thread is about.
Songs from"the american songbook" equally would go into a very different drawer.
And I did not ever say anything about good cover versions ( and let's please not start a discussion on what a "good" cover version is, or a "bad" one)
When ever doing a cover though I think one should as a first step have a good look at it and see wether the group who is thinking about doing it can actually pull it off ( be it as a true representation of the original version or as a freer take on it.).

Haha! I just now stumbled across this thread! I was on forum hiatus for some months and was just getting caught up and saw this.

Well, thanks for the kudos to all of you who enjoyed it! And for those who didn't, thanks for watching and for your candor. We've never been much for playing covers, but people kept saying we should throw one in the mix so we thought it would be funny to play a Rush song. We knew it would probably irk a lot of Rush fans, but we figured we'd do it anyway and just have fun with it. "Limelight" seemed like the most accessible Rush song; I'm surprised no one has covered it before! (I mean, label release-type cover.) Initially I had wanted to slow it way down and have it be more of a ballad because I think it could sound cool that way. Maybe we'll still play around with that idea for an acoustic show or something; could be interesting!

Anyway, I just thought I'd chime in for fun. I know I have the kind of voice you either enjoy or hate--sort of like Geddy!--and that's fine by me. Can't please everyone, right? Thanks for taking the time to watch and post, though. Even if you think it was "awful!"

Amy / Clatter
