I play it Dorian ... so if I'm wrong, I've certainly fooled a lot of people into thinking I'm right!

One note says it all: the next-to-last of the melody. What scale degree is that note [over the tonic]?

A jazz player hears this and recognizes it even before he/she can think the words 'major sixth' or 'Dorian'.
