| | | | Copping this tone: Jazz vs Precision

This has been a nit-picky little pet peeve of mine for a while, now. It's a short clip taken from an anime, and since what you hear doesn't always match what you see (eg. they did not hire a bunch of japanese, high-school girls for this), my brain is pretty much baffled when I try to figure out what kind of bass is making this tone.
So far, my best guess is that it's a 60's jazz bass with jumbo frets and roundwound strings, plus some added overdrive/distortion. However, I've always gotten pm's swearing it is indeed a P-bass that's making the tone.
Here's the clip in question anyways: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJpKLw0icC8
Is my hearing failing me? If it is indeed a Precision, I will smash my own head open with a Rickenbacker.

You can tell the fret size on a recording? |

| | | | Sounds like a P but when he digs in around :02 it sounds like a jazz bass.

| | | Deep lows plus glassy top = Jazz. I don't hear the "added overdrive/distortion," just the guy (or gal) digging in.
"Jumbo frets" = you've listened to this clip WAAAAYYYY too many times!!!

I was thinking that also.
What does a large fret sound like?

| | | | So much compression on the clip it is hard to hear what the heck it is. Sounds like a J to me...

| | | | THANK YOU, GUYS.
I can rest easy knowing I actually had some ears!
Although it's completely irrational, I'm disappointed to know that the animation studio tried to pull a fast one on us.
Now that the magic is gone, I guess I'll go find my own tastes instead of trying to copy the next bass hero's style... |
