The Who's version of Summertime Blues is IMO the best version of it. I also like Cream's version of Crossroads, Rush's version of Seven And Seven Is, from the Feedback album, and Tom Petty's version of Something In The Air.

Even the man himself, Irving Berlin, said he liked the Taco version of "Puttin' On The Ritz" better.

Here is another one where Cee Lo turns the original to a whole different level. I don't even listen to rap or know him but this pretty good...

Les Claypool's Frog Brigade's version of Pink Floyd's 'Dogs'... a tall claim, I know, but it's freakin' great.

Miscellaneous Debris is a Primus EP with 5 covers. Don't know if you'd call these "better" than the original, since PRIMUS SUCKS, but whatever.

I dunno'- I take some issue with a few of these. All my opinion, of course. YMMV.

1. Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Hat On".
Yes. The guy has a fantastic voice. But this version is all bombastic blaring horns and completely misses the sly, perverted subtlety of the original.
Oh, and Ry Cooder's on slide. No contest.

2. ZZ Top's "Jailhouse Rock".
I love me some ZZ Top but this one was lazy at best. They bludgeoned this tune to death for the cheap seats in the stadiums. The original version crackles with excitement and menace. And it had Scotty Moore. (Again. No contest.)

3. Frampton's "Jumpin' Jack Flash".
Spank, you can't be serious. I listened to that and practically fell asleep.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, just off the top of my pointy head-

Nina Hagen's "New York, New York". At the height of her powers and ripped it a new one.
Grace Jones' "Demolition Man". Yeah, I know she was an ex-model but the groove is relentless. You gotta' love Sly & Robbie, mon.

I'm sure I'll think of some more...

I am surprised nobody mentioned "Cum on feel the noize", Quiet Riot did it better than Slade in my opinion.

Voivod's version of "Astronomy Domine." Not that there's anything wrong with Pink Floyd's.

Some old band's cover of some even older band's tune.

Didn't want to date myself.

Not better than Pink Floyd, but still very very good. Thanks for the link. Les really captures the darkness of that song.

The Pretenders acoustic version of Radiohead's Creep.

Everyone and their brother has covered that, but Chrissie takes the prize IMO.

Yes, it is. Not sure if it bests the original but it's the only contender, that's for sure.
