1. Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Hat On".
Yes. The guy has a fantastic voice. But this version is all bombastic blaring horns and completely misses the sly, perverted subtlety of the original.
Oh, and Ry Cooder's on slide. No contest.
2. ZZ Top's "Jailhouse Rock".
I love me some ZZ Top but this one was lazy at best. They bludgeoned this tune to death for the cheap seats in the stadiums. The original version crackles with excitement and menace. And it had Scotty Moore. (Again. No contest.)
3. Frampton's "Jumpin' Jack Flash".
Spank, you can't be serious. I listened to that and practically fell asleep.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, just off the top of my pointy head-
Nina Hagen's "New York, New York". At the height of her powers and ripped it a new one.
Grace Jones' "Demolition Man". Yeah, I know she was an ex-model but the groove is relentless. You gotta' love Sly & Robbie, mon.
I'm sure I'll think of some more...

Everyone and their brother has covered that, but Chrissie takes the prize IMO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lML2N4xB9GU |
