Hey Kernel,

Jaco did not write that tune. It's an old R&B tune written by Pee Wee Ellis, one of James browns horn players (sax)

I know there is a version with Maceo Parker, Pee Wee and Maceo both played with James Brown.

The tune is kind of a classic and I'm sure there are many covers of this, but Maceo's is the only one that comes to mind right now.

For a long time I thought Jaco wrote it too, the Jaco.com forum proved me wrong a long time ago. I love that song and I have heard James Brown's band play it a few times, but I still think Jaco did it the best.
I can't think of anyone else who played it though.

Yeah and it was awesome. You can really tell that they're Jaco's kids. You ever hear Felix's version of Barbary Coast? It's AWESOME and it's available for free (legal) download at Ingrid Pastorius's website along with a bunch of other stuff: www.jacop.net

Craig Garfinkel...he's a member here, too.
His band's name is Mystery Feet.

If you can find a copy of the Drummer's Collective 25th Anniversary DVD, there is a great version of the Dave Weckl Band w/ Tom Kennedy on bass doing a version of it...

A guitarist called Shaun Baxter has done a version of it on an albume called Jazz Metal. He is a pretty hot guitarist and plays the lead instead of having a big band stylee arrangment. Its pretty cool... me and the guitarist in my band do a version of it.

I have a live recording of Garaj Mahal doing The Chicken somewhere. Kai says 'are you ready for the funk' in his crazy accent and the band proceeds to kill it

Man I want a Big Apple 5.

I wish I could remember who recorded it, but I picked up one of the bass magazines that has a CD included and there was a pretty hip version in 6/8.

if you hit the Brotherhood of Groove's site, I'm pretty sure there's a live version of it posted from one of our old shows, too.

as a weird aside, I met a club owner in Florida while I was on tour who talked about meeting Pee Wee and I guess the original title was just "Chicken", 'cause it was his favorite food, but everyone else put 'The' at the beginning and it stuck.

TB's own Adrian Garcia did a fantastic cover of this, IIRC.
