"Daniel" Dee Murray demo

This is a beautiful tune that Dee Murray is quite active with. He never sounds busy or flashy. Then there is his tone!

The D is the second string from the floor...the second skinniest string. Good Luck!

This is one song which, whilst not Dee's 'best' bassline, sums up his melodic and fluid style. In many of these early songs it's actually Dee's bass which carries the rhythm of the song rather than the drums. Bob Birch (appreciably a fantastic bass player) plays Daniel with too much of a staccato/hiccup style which destroys the flow of the song IMO. Another Dee Murray masterpiece though. What a great four-piece band these guys were generally.

That's the key...four musicians playing together. In some ways, this was the peak of the electric bass as derived from the double bass. From there, it branched into a more percussive (vs. plucked), less tone (alla roundwounds), and more pedal effects (like guitars) instrument. This new road is neither better or worse, just different.

From Wikipedia- I knew he had passed away years ago...

After battling skin cancer for a number of years, Murray died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville, Tennessee, after suffering a stroke in 1992; he was 45.[1] Bandmate Davey Johnstone believes Dee's musical skills were not fully appreciated, and in March of 2011, said he was working on a documentary about the bass player.
