DANZON RECORDINGS?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

A drummer/percussionist friend and I have embarked on the joyous task of studying the performance and development of Cuban music. With the intent of deepening our pocket and understanding of all Cuban styles, resulting in a more authentic performance.

We are taking a historical approach to the development of cuban music and therfore have begun studying the Danzon.
We have found many great resources on the style but are struggling to find recordings of true danzon's. Many recordings we've found have been more recent performances and almost always feature adaptions of the style. (ie. played in a derivative of Son). Which are all great and helpful in other ways.

Can anyone recommend any recordings / albums / artists that feature tradional Danzon's?

Can no one in the TalkBass community recommend some traditional Danzon listening?

The problem you have is that Cuba has been "blockaded" by the US since the 1950s - so the technology has not been there to make any recordings since then and even if they had - they would not be able to get out past the blockade!

Ry Cooder tried to address this problem - of there being no recordings - and took some of the best Cuban musicians/singers out of Cuba - to record as the Buena Vista Social Club -

they then toured Europe as "Afro Cuban All stars" and I was lucky enough to see them live twice!

Thanks for the explanation Bruce. I can't imagine that I will be playing too many trad danzon's but for study purposes we wanted to hear the music we were reading about.

We have most, (if not all) of the Afro Cuban All Stars and Buena Vista Recordings. So I think we'll get back into them and see what we can find in the way of danzons!
