They are one of the few 90s bands that have proven themselves to have real staying power. Great band full of awesome musicians. In their early days, the only thing I had a difficult time with was Dave's vocal style. Not his voice itself, but his style and phrasing. I liked it on a song or two, but I couldn't take too much of it. Over the years though, it has really grown on me. Nowadays I listen to their live stuff very regularly and their studio stuff every now and then (like most "jam bands," I find their studio stuff to be good, but their live stuff is just fantastic). I see them live every chance I get. I've been fortunate that every time I've seen them I've been somewhere between 2nd row and 15th row. Seeing them in action up close is a real treat. |

Their rhythm section is outstanding as is their song writing. And I think their live stuff is better than their studio stuff, which says a lot as to just how good they are.

Nowadays I play a different style of music than when I was in college and more heavily into them so it doesn't come through as much, but yeah I pretty much learned everything he ever did note for note, and modeled my gear and tone choices around him, etc. big time.
Also I forget how old (or young) he was when he did their first full length album but it's a lot better than I would have done!
The last two records have been sorta underwhelming but their first 3 or 4 were really great. I would love to get to jam with Carter every night for a living. |

I can't seem to get the part under "Eat, drink and be merry..." I've got the gist of it, but I'd like it to be exact.

I have massive respect for the band, their talents, and (most importantly) their sound, but the music still doesn't get my moving too much.
I have started to get into Phish, though... |

Much like Primus was for me in high school, I probably could only play 50% of that stuff nowadays even with the record. It's probably been 2 or so years since I even busted out a DMB record, sadly to say. Probably going on 5 years since I've played a DMB song at all, aside from "Crush" which I still use as my soundcheck tune! It takes a second to transpose it to drop C (as that's what we play in) since I learned it in E std as was written but yeah people still know it! |

Popular music is dumbed down right now, sort of like it was in the late 70s punk movement - sometimes it sounds to me like a lot of these bands are trying to suck.
Or otherwise, bands are twee, sort of like a full band version of the ultra-sensitive guitar playing effeminate friend we all had in high school.
DMB is wicked tight as an ensemble, they can put on a different show every night, and every single one of them knows exactly what they are doing. Yet, their songs end up on the radio in heavy rotation. Respect. |

This song isn't going to learn to play itself!
We're doing Tripping Billies, #41, and Crash so far...

Same boat as Rush for me. Outstanding musicians, music just did/does nothing for me.

I used to pay them $3000 to play and paid my own band $1500 to open up for them. They were great then and worked their butts off playing nearly every night of the week traveling up and down the EC college circuit. A lot of us have the original cd from before they were signed with the 3d hand logo and it brings back memories. I never saw it as "radio" music back then, but what did I know.
If digital cameras existed in prominence in 1992, I'd have blackmail pics of that band that NO one should ever see...but I do have some interesting stories. |

| You'd be surprised. Wilson, Character Zero, Sand, and Funky Bitch go down really well on my gigs with my band. |

DMB, yes all the guys have talent. I respect that. However, when I hear anything from them I run away screaming. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
