Now, most of you have probably seen the version I've seen, with Tom kennedy on Bass, right?

Well, apparently, that's edited. And this version, is 10 times better.
Really shows how much of a soloist Kennedy is. I love it!

Awesome clip - thanks for posting. I'd seen the first one, and I agree that this is way better.

Yeah, that's definitely a smokin' hot performance, from the 25th Anniversary Drummer's Collective DVD set.

The whole dvd set is amazing and even though it says "Drummer's Collective" on the cover, it's definitely worth checking out... Victor Wooten has a performance and actually gives some of his time to Felix Pastorius (yes, Jaco's son), John Pattituci's group is in there and several others...

Sorry I don't remember the names of the bass players that are in there with other groups. I don't own the set, just borrowed it from our drummer.

i'll be the only bad seed here. i dig the drumming, but i'm not into the whole see how many notes i can play as fast as i can for a bass solo sort of thing. it didn't do much in terms of melody or go anywhere (bass solo wise) for me. the cat can play fast and during the verse he's got some cool stuff going on, but i don't like the bass solo.

I agree completely, I can't stand the bass on this track. He needs to lay back a little. He's got chops, we know that, I want to see if he can actually play music.

I like the arrangement of the tune for the solos. Really, really like Tom's tone.

While I can understand the comments about the solo, I also hear a lot of lines like the horn player in Tom's lines. In other words if it was a sax player playing Tom's lines would it be/sound better?

Listen to the horn solo then listen to Tom. Either way I'm diggin' it. Love his groove and articulation in the tune as well as the solo.

BUT I do like ceasarbass' Jaco link just as much. Maybe more so. What a band. Swings like a monkey from a tree.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting the link. I really liked the band better this time around. The keyboardist's quote at the end of his solo brought a smile to my face too.

Kind regards,
Beebebop,
Beijing.

i know my gripe with tom is that theres no real arc. i can kind of understand though because if i remember the live show (its been a couple of years) he only solos on a couple of tunes so he just kind of explodes on those spots he gets. but, if you listen to two of my favorite horn players (brecker and berg) they were super busy but they built their solos. (jeez its hard to remember to write in the past tense about those guys )

Tom Kennedy's bass on the "Chicken" really pales compared to that Jaco clip. "The Chicken" is an r&b instrumental. IMO, that means the bass should be groovy. Even a solo should retain some rythmn and make you want to tap your feet or dance. Kennedy could have been much more effective with a simpler, but more groovy solo.

yeah, but the dwb arrangement is more of a fusion tune than an r&b tune.

I laughed when he played that quote
i've been noticing a lot more "quotes" in peoples solos.
I hear Take the A Train (like in this one) and St. Thomas quite a bit.

Weckl or Kennedy??

I like Weckl's playing personally, but it's not for everyone. Tom Kennedy is a killer player by any regard though.

How could ANYONE criticize that?!? Come on guys!

Ya the faster-than-crap part is a bit 80's guitar solo, but the first half is pretty great! And his groove throughout the song is killer!

I've put the links to both versions on my favorites list.
Thanks, guys!
Does Jaco have some kind of warpaint on his face?

I spoke way too soon on my earlier post! I thought that three minute clip was the whole thing! After seeing the nine minute clip, I see why everyone likes it. I still like the Jaco version better, but Tom Kennedy is sick. I still have yet to meet him although I know he teaches part time at the school where I work. I would like to see that Fodera up close.

The way Tom stands there looking at the fret board etc reminds me of John Entwistle (please don't hit me).
