DEAD RAVEN CHOIR - black metal recordings with BG and DB

Sign in to disble this ad
Here are a couple of black metal songs with no guitars, just bowed DB and distorted BG. On "A rosebud in June" (which is about raising sheep, possibly the least black metal subject imaginable for a song) the percussion is also done on DB.

Turn your volume down before playing these! The production's pretty raw so the sonic details are lost but it might be an interesting example of bass-based metal. Or at least proof that using bowed strings in metal doesn't mean having to be gentle and quiet. Still, compared to DEAD RAVEN CHOIR's earlier black metal releases the loudness and shrillness are toned down considerably.

Thanks! The album won't be released until 2007 so you've got time to save up the cash, hehe. I've got too many other releases in the pipeline and don't want to flood the market.

Thats pretty scary stuff. Are these demo recordings, or are you deliberately going for the grim and necro sound?

It's not Black Metal if the production is good.

I like the way it sounds, IMO

I am deliberately going for a sound that's a lot cleaner, quieter and less shrill than our past recordings but still retains a little harshness.

What the ****....

What the ****.

That's awesome.

You guys are awesome.

Probably some of the strangest stuff I've ever heard from these forums. I love it.

It's got such a brilliantly executed deconstructionist/minimalist vibe. I LOVE THE VOCALS.

I feel aquatic when I listen to it. As if I'm floating, waist-deep in bile and stomach acid, in an ancient, esoteric tomb of some primordial king who killed millions of people.

I could mention that we have a triple LP currently available called "Cask Strength Black Metal"; a lot like this stuff but shriller and with instead of being bass-only it's got instruments from bass fiddle to mandolin. There should also be a double-CD version of that before the end of the year.

I don't know if I'm supposed to be offering stuff for sale if I'm not a supporting member... but in the US the distros with better prices include Aquarius Records (http://www.aquariusrecords.org), God Is Myth (http://www.god-is-myth.com). In Canada I recommend Profound Lore (http://www.profoundlorerecords.com). The cheapest European distro is Foreshadow (http://www.foreshadow.info). Aurora Borealis (http://www.aurora-b.com), Supernal (http://www.supernalmusic.com) and Cold Spring (http://www.coldspring.co.uk) are among those who carry it in the UK. There's a full list of distros on my website.

I decided to put one new song up on the Myspace page. I don't plan to upload anything else until the album is released, though.

Thank the True Unholy Blackmetal Songtitle-O-Matic for that one. But it's not a black metal album, it's a stark acoustic one with nonsense poetry, mostly in German.

I think I will have to wait til you bring out the CD version, since I'm not committed enough to obscurity to have an LP player Keep us posted though, I've been meaning to get a few things from Supernal Music, this would be a good excuse

Live - not with this project as it's essentially a one-man band. I've thought about hiring a few musicians and doing a mini-tour of England in September... currently trying to get that organized and figure out whether I really need that vacation time to finish some house renovations.
