Death from above 1979

They get mentioned a lot, but they don't seem to have their own thread... that I could find at least. I did a search.

Amazing bass and drum duo. They sound quite a bit like old QOTSA... which is awesome. It's really dancy rock stuff... super fun, with some sampling and so forth here and t here, but for the most part, just bass and drum.

Huge bass sound... anyone know the guys bass rig setup? If that's what this thread becomes about, this can be moved to bassists. But they are good tunes, I wish I would have known about them before they broke up.

From an w/ them interview on Bassplayer.com

Quote:
How did you go about filling up the sound?
Since it’s just two of us onstage I need a full-range sound. Using two 8x10 cabinets and putting out about 1,200 watts helps have a big sound. My rig gives me about as many speakers as a guitarist’s full stack plus a bass player’s 8x10. I also like to use amp distortion because it gives me more dynamic response than a pedal.

Instead of stimulating output with preamp gain or a pedal, I prefer to get maximum output from the instrument. I rewired the Rickenbacker so that nothing impedes the pickup’s signal. I only use solid-state amps because the attack is instant—it’s much quicker than a tube amp. I also put PA speakers in my cabinets because they have better top-end response than bass speakers.
They're pretty cool, definitely have a fun vibe to them. I personally prefer Big Business. Their sounds are kinda different though.

I was all about them when they first came out, then about 3 months later I just lost interest. It started to sound so boring and bland, on top of that, my school brought them to perform and they were jerks to the students putting on the show; another thing that turned me off them. The guy's bass tone is pretty good, I will give him that.

I didn't even know they broke up.

I was really digging the sound on their album. I thought he used some type of fuzz pedal, it's seems a little too "snazzy" to get that sound alone from amp distortion.

You can nail his sound using a fuzz (I use my depth charge) and either the MXR bass DI or SABBDI

You should hear Whitey Houston if you like Canadian bass/drum/vocal duos that broke up too soon.

Bass and Drum bands are becoming pretty damn popular. And to think a few months ago, people were freaking out about White Stripes/Black Keys bands wiping out bassists. I've heard some amazing Bass and Drum duos.

Village of Dead Roads (the band I toured with) did a show with the amazing Bloarzeyd: http://www.myspace.com/bloarzeyd

Though they list Batman as a third member. Check it out if you like weird/mathy rock. They are also hilarious. IMO, this kid takes the cake for HUGEST bass/guitar sound in one... and yes, I'm including Big Business.

Yep, I think it's like an hour or something... I have no sense of geography.

Jesse is now writing and recording bass for the new QOTSA and I think that he might be the new permanent bass player for them as they haven't had a steady one for a while.

If they can't get Nick back (ideal), Jesse would be a good choice... I get such a QOTSA vibe from DFA1979 anyway.

The only time that I saw DFA1979 live was when they were opening for QOTSA and NIN.

I've been trying to find more bass/drum duos out there, stuff like DFA1979, Lighting Bolt, Ruins, godheadsilo, and a small band out of Jacksonville called The Yusge. I'll have to check out Big Business and Bloarzeyd. Any other suggestions?

OM. They kick the pants off of any other bass/drum duo.

There's a band from here in Chicago called Mr. Russia.
They've got the DFA1979 setup. Real good bass tone too. Our band played with them once a couple years ago - the frontman has a killer bass setup - overdriven Fender P bass through a 15" cab (not sure what kinda head)...I'm sure it's all changed now.

**** - I guess they actually have 2 bass players now!

I like the guitar than bass. During my college days, I always p;ay my guitar. But now that I'm married, I didn't even touch my guitar for quite sometimes now. I think, I already forgot to play my guitar. Maybe if my kids are enough, I'll try to play my guitar.
