I just don't understant this... How can people listen to music that tells you to go around killing people or to kill yourself, or things like that? It just doesn't make any sense to me... Why would someone listen to that kind of music?!?!?!

I am sorry, but you are very ill informed. That's not what all that music is about. If anything, they only sing about such people for shock value. I mean look at your reaction to it, it obviously must be doing what they intended.

And I know this is probably not the best defense, but here is a term paper I wrote about metal music last semester. It's not omnipresent nor all encompassing, just kind of a crash course in metal history and then some Freudian analysis of why I was drawn to the genre (brownie points). Without further adieu:

first of all to answer your questions " How can people listen to music that tells you to go around killing people or to kill yourself, or things like that? It just doesn't make any sense to me... Why would someone listen to that kind of music?!?!?! " one by one.

" How can people listen to music that tells you to go around killing people or to kill yourself, or things like that? "

first of all it is very rare for death metal lyrics to contain a message stating that you, the listener, to kill someone or to kill yourself. When the lyrics do state something about someone killing someone it is either the character that the lead singer is portraying themselves as in the song that is doing the killing, or it is the lead singer being killed ( either by themselves or another person, for example the bloodbath song " eaten " ). When the lead singer does tell the listener to commit suicide it is obviously sarcastic and not meant to be taken seriously, as is with just about everything else lyrically in death metal. Very rarely does anyone in death metal or black metal take their music seriously to the extent of wishing someone true harm, and the same goes to almost every other genre.

and people can listen to it by turning on their cd players and turning up the volume

" It just doesn't make any sense to me... Why would someone listen to that kind of music?!?!?! "

People would listen to it for the same reason people would listen to any other genre of music and for the same reason why people read, write, play music, watch tv, go to movies, and play sports, because it entertains them. Some people are very entertained by death metal music for the same reason that people find other things entertaining, and as with every other activity, some people will like it and others will not.

Also, as to pertaining to why people would like to listen to the violent and gorey music in the genres of death metal and black metal, they do because it can also be used to relieve stress and get out emotions that they can not get out when listening to music that is all about live and kindness. If you found out your girl friend was pregnant by your best friend who was also doing your mom and your dad and your uncle buck from missisipi and that he stole $2,000 from you to get first class plane tickets to the bahamas with your sister would you be more likely to listen to music that had lyrics that were about getting it on, enjoying life, or shoving a meat hook up someones pie-hole? Or what if you had a bad day at work? Some people would rather cool off with light music but some want to get that aggression out, and death metal and black metal are very good for that.

ok now onto describing why people write death metal and black metal and why i think you are misinformed on the genre...

reasons why
1. It is fun to write about subjects that other people rarely do. It makes you constantly feel like you are pushing borders and not limiting yourself to the standards or barriers of others. Just like how Jaco wouldnt just allow himself to stick to the same limits most other jazz bassists did at his time, people like chris barnes and george fisher and Mikael Åkerfeldt dont allow them to stick to the same old verse chorus verse chorus break chorus " i love her, i dont love her, i feel happy today " that most other people do.

2. It is funny. A lot of death metal and black metal lyicists have dark senses of humor, and if you have a dark sense of humor you would probably laughing the first time you read the lyircs to the Cannibal Corpse Song " Blunt Force Castration ". an excerpt from the lyrics are

" Smash his scrotum sac
Allered ferociously
Survived this attack
Sterile now left to bleed
Emptied in the croth
Gonads reduced to pulp
Hateful remedy
Void of sexuality

Sledgehammer destroys
Groin tattered and maimed

Emasculate
Crushing the testicles fast
Gebillitate
Cutting off the penis last

Macerate
Deforming
Enervate
Caponized "

you may just find that gross but i find that hillarious and i am sure Alex Webster ( i think he wrote this one, correct me if i am wrong ) found it hillarious when he wrote it.

3. Horror and violence sells. What are some of the best selling movies of all time? Movies like Nightmare on Elm Street, Saw, Rocky, Terminator. Horror and violence, as previously stated, sells, and many people enjoy a good horror flick, and a majority of death metal could be described as horror movies on cd and audio tapes. If you think the people who write death metal are sick and twisted and not just normal people that enjoy this stuff like others then you must think people like Stephnen King are psychotic as well.

Why you appear to be very misinformed

1. Not all death metal and black metal is about murder. A lot of it is but not all of it. Some of it is about " worshipping evil deities " or about events that have happened such as the massacre of nanking, or about the acts of serial killers such as ted bundy or the monster of the andes. Sometimes it is about gorey events ( real or fiction ) that do not lead to death such as necrophilia or eating the dead or about zombies eating each other.

2. Also, not sure if you think this but many do so i am just going to say it, many people think that you have to be satanic to be in a death metal band, and i just wanted to say that that is complete BS. There are some satanists in death metal and black metal ( members of Mayhem, singer chris barnes, etc. ) but i am sure there are satanists in other genres ( for example nu-metal. Marylin Manson is a priest in an official satanic church. It may just be a huge gimmick but you cant really get more officially satanic than that i think ). There are a lot of non-satanists in death metal and black metal. Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse is a Catholic, My guitarist in my death metal band is a mormon.

3. And finally... Carrots! that is why!

Question: How can anyone list "Sid Vicious" as an influence on their playing? He wasn't audible half the time because he couldn't play.

Asking why people like any genre of music is stupid. I could ask: Why do people like ska? It's like someone threw up happy in my lap. Making uninformed generalizations of an entire genre is always fun.

Alex Webster = Catholic? That's interesting, couldn't find information on it, but wouldn't put it past the strange world of metal.

Anyways, one thing I always find funny are reviews of Dream Theater's Train of Thought album, specifically the last song (forget the title). I've read, "This song is the best song in the world because LaBrie's telling the truth about those evil Christians!" Yet LaBrie has said that he himself is a Christian. Metropolis, penned by Petrucci, could be viewed as going against Christian principles in its message, yet Petrucci is a practicing Catholic. Last thing that's funny, the late Chuck Schludiner, leader of the band Death, has been "accused" of being a Christian in his lyrics, whatever that means.

...and for the record, there are Christian Death Metal and Black Metal bands out there such as Mortification and Ceremonial Sacred in sequence to their genre. I, myself, am doing a one-man "Unblack" Metal project in the "ub3r kVlt" sound of Burzum or Leviathan, which hopefully I'll have some songs up within the coming months.

You think Dani Filth looks like that all the time?
He'll be the first to admit it's all for show.

That's the information that circulates around the internet. If you can refute it, more power to you.

I like all sorts of music. Pop, Reggae, Rap, Jazz, Death metal, you know. Typical stuff. Deathmetal, black metal and the like, i dont really find them to be singing about how you should go about killing somone, rather, they portray beautiful images of bunnies and warm sunny days. (not). I'm a big fan of cannibal corpse, black dahlia murder, and necrophagist. Just looking at song titles will let you know that there are often songs about smashing somones face in with a hammer, stabwounds, the usual stuff. To tell you the truth the appeal of deathmetal and black metal to me is the intricacy of riffs, rhythms etc. Necrophagist has an outstanding bassit who will really step out of the pocket and do some pretty daggon niffty stuff. cannibal corpses riffs are so quick that it amazes me that their bassist plays with his fingers. The appeal of deathmetal is different for everyone
