The Decemberists

I just saw them on Jay Leno and I dug them alot! They reminded me a bit of old REM, but obviously with a more full sound since they are a much bigger band.

Their bassist also had a cool Lakland too.

Yeah, the Decemberists are a cool band. They are from here in Portland and I've seen them live probably ten times. Good stuff. I've had a chat with Chris Funk, the guitarist, after a show. Cool guy.

Their new album The King is Dead has more of an REM influence than their previous stuff. In fact Peter Buck from REM played on some of the tracks.

They were definitely going for an REM sound. The bassist sounded like Mike Mills on the song they played on Jay Leno.

Here's a HQ link to the Leno performance.

They're a good band. I've been following them for several records. The Hazards of Love is a fantastic rock-opera type record, with a huge variety of styles. And the girls on that record can really sing. I saw them perform the entire album at the Treasure Island Festival in Oct 2009, just before the Flaming Lips showered us in confetti. That was an epic lineup.

A cool band, for sure. I saw them in 2007 in downtown Chicago (for free!) with an orchestra behind them, they sounded great. Nate Query had his blue Lakland JO then, too. (He played a little upright as well.)

I have completely fallen in love with "The King is Dead" - a fantasic album (especially on vinyl with a decent-quality system) that I find thoroughly engaging start to finish. I haven't enjoyed any of their previous work nearly as much.

GREAT band. Not exactly a "Bass player's" band, but great song writing - the closest thing to a real smart prog band I've heard in years.

Peter Buck's fingerprints are all over that record. "Down by the water" has been getting some radio play (at least on the stations I listen to) and I have to laugh every time I hear it, because Peter Buck almost sounds like he's plagiarizing himself! Granted, he sounds great, and Mike Mills has said that when it comes to rhythm guitar playing, Peter Buck has the best right hand in the business. But when I listen to his guitar part on that song I totally hear him on "The one I love" by R.E.M.
