Awesome clips, thank you. Last week I went to see Deep Purple and was blown by the tone Roger Glover has. I was close enough to get the sound coming from his 4 Megoliath cabs, very nice sound and excellent playing.

Anybody catch the mistake at 5:25? Surprised they didn't fix that, otherwise brilliant!

Ha, good catch. My guess is that they did fix it; by fading out the clam, as it were. Back in those days, splicing in a clam-fix was often more effort than it was worth, especially on a hammering part like this.

The very same thing happens in the guitar part of Day Tripper after the guitar solo. No splice, just a drop, and it's really obvious. On Glover's part here, it's likely not so noticeable in the mix, but I will go back and listen!

It's amazing how on top of the beat Glover is. I've been playing for 30 years and I don't think I suck, but I tend to trail the beat just a hair. Glover is eating it right up and Paice must be sliding off his stool. Odd recording parts separately and then playing them live. Sometimes it feels like a different tune when playing it together as opposed to the recording.

Very loose - almost reckless, I dig it! I sometimes lament the perfection of modern recording.

Can't say I ever noticed the Clam until I heard this. But! Machine Head wasn't recorded track-by-track & then lovingly knitted together by Martin Birch, it was recorded as an ensemble:

For Machine Head we wanted to take this approach one stage further, and as it was impossible for all of us to play in the corridor outside the control room, we decided to record the album on stage, using the natural acoustics of the surroundings. In other words, make a studio album under live conditions almost like a live album without the audience.

It's an approach I have a lot of sympathy for. I imagine it's a pita for the engineers to set up & maintain separation, whilst still allowing the band to interact, but the payoff is potentially huge as the 'live vibe' is retained. Maybe that's why a lot of the old-school classics from the Rock 'n' Roll era still sound thumpin' 50-60 years down the line. Same approach.

Highway Star was phenomenal. Glover was a much more articulate player than I ever gave credit for being. What a bassline! This was always one of my favorite DP tracks.

reckless is a great description of this track and i also love it. although, instead of staying "on top of the beat", i would say he got way ahead, especially from 2:00 to 3:00. and just like my YouTube comment says: it makes me feel a little better about my own tempo issues to hear someone rocking a bassline like this on a classic track. ah, the days before everything had to be super perfect on a studio recording.

btw, i'm only commenting on Highway Star. haven't listened to the 2nd one yet.

This is a great find, thanks. I'd actually pay good money to hear the Glenn Hughes channel from the Made In Europe live recording.

I listened again and couldn't particularly hear RG getting ahead of the beat - the isolated track is a little misleading as you can hear the echo of the drums bleeding into the bass mic.

man, mistakes were quite common back then - I think it adds some character to recordings (perfection is boring). It speaks to a time when guys got into the studio, did the work and GOT OUT. Now, it goes on... and on... and on...

Hello, I'm new here but been playing bass for quite awhile as a hobby.
I wish I saw this awesome website earlier. I made a YouTube video of the Live Made in Japan version of Smoke on the Water playing by ear a few months ago. I played it a bit different than the original following the guitar riff as well. I thought some of you guys might enjoy it.* I just winged it during the guitar solo.

(Highway Star) And a similar one at 5:49. Have to LOL at the youtube comment that it's a fake. If I could just fake the tone (not to mention the notes) I'd be a happy camper!
