Ok, let's see how this first attempt goes.
I have an idea for a series of threads entitled "The Definitive ___" in order to help out people looking to expand their horizons into new genres of music. If you are knowledgeable about the particular genre listed, feel free to contribue suggestions of artists that you believe are definitive of the genre.
Note that this is not about listing all of the artists you necesarily like that fall within a genre, or all of the band names you can rattle off from memory, but artists that really define the genre and would be considered the "a prime example" of whatever genre we're discussing.
This is not a debate about the genre or subgenres themselves! You may feel like making a crack about the different sub-genres of metal, but we don't need those here. I'm sure you have some clever/witty response about black/death/goth metal, but save those for a different thread. Nobody cares.
Enough chitchat... this first thread is about metal, in all of its glorious forms. If you list a band, please list the sub-genre it belongs to! (Power, thrash, death, black, grindcore) If there are any specific songs/albums that need to be listed, put those down, as well. Why metal first? I dunno, I'm on an Opeth kick right now.
(Yes, I do realize the subjective nature of these selections, but... who care? Have fun. ) |

I'm not an authority on the intricacies of the multitude of metal sub-genres, but I think I could comment on these bands. |

Progressive Metal - Dream Theater
Black Metal - Dark Funeral - an apprentice of satan (the "teach children..." version of the song)
keyboardbased Black Metal - Dimmu Borgir
Doom Metal - My Dying Bride
Thrash metal - Megadeth
Neo-thrash - The Haunted
Sleaze - Guns n Roses (if they do cound as sleze)
Gothic metal - Theatre of Tragedy
Heavy Metal - Manowar
Power Metal - Hammerfall (two first albums)
Nu-Metal - Machine Head
Death Metal - Morbid Angel
old hard rock/metal - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppeling or Deep Purple
Grunge - Alice in Chains
Viking Metal - Mithotyn
Folk Metal - Skyclad
Pretty much basic answers. The thread which I replied to was what bands we would choose for a mixed cd for beginners in different kinds of metal. |

It is a delightful assortment of dropped 'D' or 'C' "forks in the garbage disposal" Black/Death-metal type tunes.
After a while of this, they played an Alice in Chains song, and it sounded kinda mellow.

| | | I'll post in this thread instead of creating a new one; anyone know of a progressive metal group which uses rap lyrics and doesn't sound like Linkin Park discovered the 5/8 bar?
------------
Anyways:
Spiral Architect - Technical Tech-Metal
Aghora - Fusion / World-Esque Metal
Sacred Warrior - Christian NWOBHM
Apocalyptica - Cello / Symphonic Metal
Only ones I can think off the top of my head in one second that people might not know. All the metal you could ever digest is at http://www.metal-archives.com. Very enlightening sight for metal fans and people looking to learn more about metal bands. |

Also, Opeth is sick too, but a couple people already listed 'em!
Check out Capharnaum and Martyr for some technical deathy metal that's fun to listen to.
I also love the (newer) Dimmu Borgir....

AuG | They call it New Wave of American Heavy Metal, which is a pretty broad name for bands like Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage (who rule btw). Core meets metal, ergo Metalcore |
