Through the funk 101 thread I found this track, and I couldn't figure out where I knew it from (Claypool), so I googled Dexter Gordon and found this thread

Worthy of a bump I think at least.

This is an old thread but not sure where the animosity towards Claypool comes from.

It clearly says in the liner notes on the album that Tommy the Cat includes The Awakening... Images for Primus - Rhinoplasty

It's not his fault nobody noticed.

I remember reading some Claypool interview in BP where he discussed his cover songs in great detail, including how he had to get whichever drummer he was playing with at the time to re-learn The Awakening, which they had been part of their routine fifteen years earlier but hadn't touched since.

Yeah, Dexter is criminally underrated as does not get the credit that he has been due for a long time. Here is another track from that project with Dexter on an Alembic:

YouTube - ‪The Reddings - Main Nerve 1981‬‏

What a player!

Out of curiosity, did he go through a lot of different basses? Most of the Redding tunes I've heard don't sound like an Alembic to me, more like a jazz bass or Stingray.

He's actually using both an Alembic and a Stingray on The Awakening.
