Maybe that could be the topic of a whole other thread...is there such a thing as women's music and men's music? Do more men like MIles Davis and John Coltrane and Limp Bizkit than women? Do more women like Diana Krall, Kenny G and Ricky Martin than men?

Well, the only people I know on TB who say they like Limp Bizkit appear to be teenage girls!

I must say that my comments weren't targeted at anyone other than the advertisers/marketing men. If women or anybody else likes/prefers Diana Krall and really likes listening to her music, then this is fine - as I say I just don't like being patronised or have assumptions made about how I make my decisions to buy music.

I think I agree with Ed that this is not necessarily about men's or women's music, but rather like the phenomenon of "coffee table" books. People don't read them, they just like having them around. I don't mean to say that this applies to you JO, but the feeling is that people are buying this just to be "tasteful" background music that they don't really listen to, but rather contributes to the ambience they are trying to create in their lives.

Once again, this is fine - if people want to buy musical wallpaper that co-ordinates with their lifestyle, then who I am to complain. I'm just saying that this is not why I buy or listen to music.

I wouldn't say it's mens or womens as I know that there are people who do this of both sexes and I think that quite often gay people will buy music that fits in with their lifestyle rather than necessarily being what they would choose to listen to - a big generalisation I know and obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but it is a phenomenon that I have experienced - we have a large gay community in our town!

Both my girlfriend and I listen to a lot of music and if anything her tastes would probably be considered more masculine than mine!

She likes loud raucous music with distorted guitars - mostly what you would call "Indie Music".
Whereas I would be quite happy listening to classical music or a nice Jazz ballad.

The big difference that we have noticed is that she quite likes music as "background" to another activity , whereas I feel it's more important and always like to devote my full attention to music and it just irritates me if it is treated as background - I want to listen intently or not at all.

Bruce, you and I have been down the road of "background music" before, but I'll gladly waltz down it again. Like your girlfriend, I enjoy "background" music. That doesn't mean I find music less important than you do because I am not always paying strict attention to the music. I DO pay strict attention when I have the time to do nothing else. But when I have other things to be doing, I feel having music in the background enriches the experience.

Just one example, I HATE when a restaurant doesn't have music playing or it is so low that it is just ambient noise rather than an embellishment to the ambience. I'd call it roughly similar to the difference between real roses and plastic ones. My favorite thing of all is when a restaurant has a harpist, an acoustic guitarist, a pianist or a string quartet playing. I don't stop eating to concentrate on every note and nuance of the music, but the music just makes the food taste better.

(And, hey, I'm not gay either! I've been married thrirty-four years to the same long-suffering guy. )

Back to Ms. Krall. For me, her new CD is much more than a coffee table book, put on the table as decoration. While I do like the CD in the background when I am busy, but I also enjoy "really" listening to it too. I love the sultry music, the lush orchestrations and McBride's very sexy bass.
