I bet at least one of them is a Tom Petty fan. Hopefully its just an honest mistake.

While it's true there are similarities, it's also true that the chords to the songs have been arranged similarly in about 42,000 other songs. There's no rip here.

I heard something about this. The interesting thing as well is I believe Rick Ruben produced both songs.

yup. we could start a megathread if we list all the songs that go A-G-D. Even the similar groove sounds different with different people playing it. Flea still sounds like Flea and Tom Petty like himself too.

I wonder what Tom Petty would say?

Is it Ruben's job to know this?
They sound real close?
I think Petty have a little $$$ coming his way?

Seen the video? If it's the one I'm thinking of, the whole thing spoofs 4-5 different bands by making the players dress and act like the other band member througout the whole video. Maybe the similarity of the song is part of all that and they're just having fun. Maybe they made sure that there wasn't too much similarity. Maybe they got permission...
Maybe...
Well, this could go on all night.
Maybe someone should go to their website and send them an email and ask them about it. Now THAT would be interesting!

I think he would tell everybody it's a non-issue.

The thing about all of these "ripoff" songs is that theres no way they were written with malicious/deliberate intent. Theres no way that any member of the Chili Peppers thought, "Hey guys, we can totally steal this song to sell more records!", espically with a song by such a well known artist.
