I found this version of N.I.B: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4by8NaLYhRk
Does anyone know when this came out and what album it's from?
Also, is that Geezer on bass? Can anyone tell what bass he's playing? |

Edit: beat me by 2 seconds!

EDIT: I'm really interested to hear some of those covers on that CD, though.

I dig both versions. I felt Les' playing for this was very tasteful for the song. No complaints. It's not the original, but it's also not all the original people.

I must say that I didn't think it was Geezer because the bass line seemed to be different from Geezer's bass line. The other thing I noticed was that the bass was turned way up on this version vurses the original. The guitar sounded similar to Tony's at least. I like the original a bit better. |

Edit: That's one of the first songs I ever learned to play. Black Sabbath rules!

Of course this is purely a subjective opinion but I think the bass is EQ'd to be very intrusive into the guitars, while at the same time the bass is absent in the usual "bassy" parts of the sonic spectrum.
It sounds like Claypool is playing a guitar solo throughout the entire song, the actual guitar might as well not even be there and the bottom end (what the bass should be attending to) is being neglected.
I like Les Claypool's work both with Primus and with his solo projects and I think he usually does a great job with covers, particularly the Pink Floyd covers, but doing Geezer's job in Black Sabbath takes a certain mindset and so does covering any Black Sabbath song.
It's one thing to take a Black Sabbath song and make it your own but I don't think this attempt is very musical or very listenable.
IMO. Other opinions may vary.

And Claypool has also covered Have a Cigar and some other Floyd tunes I don't recall right now.
I really dig CCFFB's version of Pigs (Three Different Ones).

I really dig CCFFB's version of Pigs (Three Different Ones). | I grabbed that CD out of interest and thought it was an excellent cover of Animals ... so good that I couldn't see the point in listening to it when I had the original as well. (If that makes any sense ...)
