At least we can agree on something. Jamie Cullum and Lady Gaga are fantastic! This collab with Tony Bennett only makes me love her more.

I agree that you can't get anymore soulful than Stevie Wonder.

I disagree that you can't get anymore soulful than "sounding a lot like Stevie Wonder."

There are ten billion singers who sound a lot like Stevie Wonder.

None of them have his natural emotion and soul.

Where's the emotion?

I didn't hear any.

And that is my final criticism of this group.

Afterall, if you are getting something from them, then they are good.

Why listen to me? People have differing tastes!

Well, like I said before, I can totally respect the fact that the Dirty Loops guys have killer chops (and with that term I'm including all aspects of technical proficiency, theoretical as well as physical). But having listened a bit more over the last couple of days, I'm still not overwhelmed by it. I don't dislike it. It just doesn't really excite me or move me very much. The Lady Gaga cover showed the most interesting signs of some funk and groove for me. The bass playing was awesome, but it would have got Jamerson fired on the spot.

(I'm just kidding, before anyone takes that comment seriously - there's a lot of great bassists whose playing would have got Jamerson fired on the spot, so it's not really a true barometer.)

To Kwesi and those who dig the DL tunes - cool, enjoy. But it's just not really my own kind of stuff any more. As far as popular appeal goes, I think this is only going to reach musicians. It would pretty much empty most club dance floors or get people twiddling the controls on their car radio within seconds. That's not a criticism at all, you could say the same about Weather Report (for example). It's just that most people simply wouldn't understand what the Dirty Loops guys are playing or be able to appreciate their undoubted abilities.

First I want to make it clear I am not bashing ANYONE.

Anyway, people have different perceptions of groove it seems...

I don't think these guys groove. Not the groove I grew up hearing. Not the groove all the older cats I know speak of, either. I'm the same age as these guys, btw.

Think of groove as an egg rolling across a table. The uber-lateness of notes... playing so behind the beat that if it were any later it would sound wrong. That's groove. When the beat makes you move in a wave like motion that you just can't control cause it just captures you. Stuff that sounds lazy. Stuff that makes the ladies drip.

Since Talkbass is run by the FCC, I can't say the rest of what I want to say, but you get the picture.

These guys don't do that. Not to my ears/

I think their original stuff will have the same feel as the covers, don't quote me as fact cause I haven't heard any yet, simply because that is THEIR sound. That modern-fusion-funk-prog-rock-on-the-beat music that I guess started popping up in the early/mid 90's or something. I haven't listened to much of it because it's not really my thing. Some Tribal Tech tunes come to mind.

No, I am not comparing DL to TT, no.

It's cool that they can do that, they do it well. I couldn't do it. Even though they are rewriting fairly new songs, it sounds dated and done before. Even if you have not heard of any bands like them, it is safe to assume they are not alone... they aren't.

As far as this bringing pop in a new direction? Never. At least never with the people who buy music just because it's music that they like. I've found musicians forget how to listen to music. Do you remember how things sounded to you before you started playing? Or had any interest in playing? It's hard. Those are the people of the world who buy the most music, not musicians. That's who the record companies market to. Thats why top 40 is top 40, I guess.

There would have to be some sort of mass music education program or something to get regular people to maybe understand, appreciate, and regularly listen to the more "complex" music out there. You might get one or two of those in people these days... but very, very rarely all three.

I'm confident in saying that as I've now been playing literally half my life, live in probably the most musically diverse city in the world, and maybe 90% of the people I've come across in my life are non musicians, but LOVE music.

I think I ran off topic a bit, but it eh... this is TB..

whatta buncha catty bitches.

edit: personally I am in the Bassybill camp, but as was said, it makes groups like this no more or no less valid for their contributions to music, and I think it's awesome that these guys kill it and are having fun. Heaven forbid!!! Some of you guys need to get yourselves in check, get to practicing, and get some perspective.

Yeah I thought so and corrected it a few posts down, but I really dig those videos and wouldn't mind hearing more about them.

Re: Groove. There are lots of these. Muscle Shoals and Nashville feel the pocket behind the beat, on the back side of the "egg" if you will. A lot of Fusion and particularly European players tend to feel the Groove on the top of the beat or on the front part of the "egg". Weather Report, Yes, Level 42 and Return to Forever feel the groove this way to my ears. Dirty Loops are in this latter category to my ears. I personally dig them. Between these guys and Thundercat it feels like the beginning of a good time for Music in general and Bass Guitar in particular.

Why does it really bother some of you that some of us like their music for whatever reason. I though music was about bringing some joy into your own life by playing it and sharing that joy with others who "want" to listen. If you don't like it, don't sit at YouTube for 30 minutes watching the videos. Like wise don't waste your time making fun of us that do enjoy it, and it's not just this it's every type of person that wants to make fun of another type of music. Now enough touchy feely crap. If you guys bashing this are so freaking good, by all means please bless us with your music and leave 10 or 20 links to stuff you professionally recorded and made videos of.....Thats what i thought. Seriously if you don't like it, skip to the next thread. Sorry I'm a jerk.
Signed Ben.

Wowowow.... ok I'm a crap on bass

BUT ! I have some ears to, and before criticizing anything, I take the necessary time to understand what someone wants to make me listen to. This is for the 30 minutes.

I didn't only bash, there's some guys here that have some musical knowledge, and their arguments are based mostly on those arguments. I had a cool sharing about DL with kwesi, he loves them, I don't, everyone explain why, it's a forum, everyone can agree... or not...

You are happy with your ferrari? ok guy nice to you. Majors did a great job on your musical habits IMHO

I said ... IMHO

it's a full-on bromance up in here!

Starrchild, saying what I really feel most likely get me permaban, thus you get the cliff notes.

Well, looks like the buzz had made it's way to Bass Player magazine. Chris Jisi writes a small article.

Saw this on No Treble, seriously good, and despite being a fan of mainly disgusting death/black metal and grindcore, i found the tunes still in my head afterwards, high tribute.

the solo on Biebers tune is godly.

Nice. He got the make of the bass wrong, though.. said it's an MTD.
As soon as I saw the "Baby" video, I sent Brian Fox an email and he assured me they were already on it.

The fact that these guys have caused such a reaction here and elsewhere is pretty awesome alone. Add to it that they are killer musicians and you have the making of an extremely bright future. Bring it on I say, it's about time someone stirs the pot a little. I can see them on Letterman or SNL before too long.

He's an EBS endorser. Can't go wrong with EBS. Pricey, but killer sound.
