I think they sound like Level 42 mixed with Jamiroquai (their singer sounds like Stevie too). I'd buy their music. Great musicians!

dirty loops, what else have you got???

I'm skeptical of these dirty loop guys and feel they are forced and over the top musically while visually appearing to be just hanging out in the rehearsal space casually playing these tunes...

To me, these guys sound too contrived and worked out. Sure the arrangements are very good, hip and progressive, and the guys all appear to be playing very well in the videos. But I just feel like the videos are produced in a way to exaggerate their whole entertainment package, rather than show the real honest performances.

I believe they are all lipsyncing their performances from a highly polished professionally recorded and edited session. I believe all of the ensemble parts and solos are written out and well rehearsed. These guys have a great ability to write very modern soul/gospel/jass fusion style arrangements for popular radio hits.

There is a youtube video of the band playing a live version of Cirkus which doesnt come close to the polished slick sound of their famous pop tune remakes. In fact, they sound like your above average college recital ensemble who are merely reading down a not so difficult chart.

Its my feeling that the bassist is the main musical influence of the group, based on some other youtube videos of him, interviews of him, and the obvious visual bias towards showing him in their pop videos.

Many of the drums are sampled and the video of the drummer typically only shows him playing small segments of drum fills rather than the entire phrase.

The videos are obviously shot with multiple takes and seem professionally edited into a very energetic piece but maintain the look and feel of being shot by someone who is just hanging out in the informal rehearsal space while these guys supposedly MURDER these pop cover tunes with ease!

I believe these guys are all wonderful players, and also have a terrific and solid musical educational background which allows them to mimic the american progressive soul/gospel styles for their approach to these pop tunes!

Bravo Swede guys! But, .... what else do you have for us besides your over the top highly arranged worked out and rehearsed versions of american pop tunes?

Can you provide a link to that vid? The only thing I could find was the "cover of a cover" vid - someone else playing that tune.

Wow, I forgot all about that song. I used to play it in an old cover band that never did anything but rehearse.

Phew. I try to stay out of these mindless conversations, since it's so utterly pointless. But you caught my attention with this one. The arrogance of your post just makes my jaw drop.

These guys have spent more time working on their craft as musicians, arrangers and composers than most musicians have spent even listening to music. They love what they do, and they're utterly humble about it.

But here comes another forum hero, a champion for all that is true, good, and tasteful, to ask the most important question of all. "Bravo Swede guys! But, .... what else do you have for us besides your over the top highly arranged worked out and rehearsed versions of american pop tunes?"

Oh, the utter arrogance of that statement. If you want anything else than what they are offering you, FOR FREE, why don't you go somewhere else?

Your post reeks of the usual bitterness associated with these forums. What you and your ilk need to understand is that they don't owe you anything. They're offering a a gift to the world. If you don't care for it, fine. But please, don't go around acting like they owe you a god damned thing.

So lemme see, they work out some pretty killer arrangments, practice the snot outta them, record them and make very nice slick videos.....I fail to see what the issue is.

Talkbass never dissapoints. So many armchair "experts".

Landay, let's see a clip of your own playing.

And of course, you didn't bother to fill out your profile. Trolls like you never do.

Folks, this is Landay's first post to the forum, apparently, and what a piece of work it is!

I've only seen one live video of them (here) and it's not Circus. It's also a soundcheck, in which case they might not have been playing at 100%.
I hear all these people slagging them for not doing originals. I'm not so sure I want to hear their original music. Not that it wouldn't be cool, but I can't imagine it being cooler than what they're already doing.

Admit it though, you'd still totally bang the bass player, right? I won't tell anyone, I promise.

For the amount of time I've been playing, Henrik Linder is another one of the many players who reminds me of just how much I do not know. As a result I've been practicing in very differant manner these days after hearing this very talented young man. I'll never come close to being in his league but his playing sure gave me a kick in the backside to want to do much better with what I have.

Can't wait for thier CD to come out.

His post went way further then complaining about them not doing originals.

He is basically saying that they are a fake, contrived band using studio trickery. Read his "well written" post again.

Also, it's his first post to this forum, and he is anonymus in his profile. Sorry, but that does not make me lend any credence to what he has written.

It's ok to have contrary opinions around here. I make a habit of it myself, but this is just mindless slagging on a band we all know by now to be excellent.

Well, first post and quite analytical, as opposed to the usual which bass question. You don't have to agree, but it is in the realm of possibility and makes you think. Nothing wrong with that. The industry is guilty of far worse.

You just posted a Louis CK video in response to someone being reasonably skeptical about a few videos on the internet?

I think Landay made a well thought out criticism on Dirty Loops, something which you don't see on the internet too often, and you go on to respond to them like they insulted your mother. Seriously, learn to read into things and think before you post.

I think JHL's response was also well thought out. And he hit the nail on the head, as regards internet forum BS.

Audiophage, where were you when I was making several of my own well-thought out internet statements?

Here are some of my own beauts:

1. No way can a 129 dollar chinese made bass sound or feel as good as a 2000 dollar bass.

2. The Beatles did not invent every single form of music used in modern pop.

3. Victor Wooten, being one of the world's best bassists, does not always make the solo albums he should.

I got my head handed to me on a platter for making these statements. Where were you in my defense?

Instead, you are defending some person (who we have no idea who he is or what his expertise in music is) that posts something really ridiculous about a brilliant up and coming band.

I have to agree. I've heard all kinds of people falling over themselves regarding Dirty Loops and it would seem that many such people are thoroughly offended by any criticism whatsoever of their new heroes. I respect the talent the guys in Dirty Loops have but I don't find myself really wanting to listen to them for very long. As for the "don't criticise unless YOU can do better" counter-assault - that one never holds water with me. Being able to outperform is not a prerequisite for having an (often valid) opinion. Any coach knows that.
