If we all knew why a hit is a hit, then we would all write hits. But the basic qualification for a hit is that someone in the organization has a buttload of money that they use to buy off radio station programmers and buy their way into commercials, TV shows, and movies.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen... It has it all: A piano intro, vocal harmonies, guitar solo, an a capella operatic section, a hard rock headbanging section, and a gigantic tam-tam.
