Djent Metal bands?

Sign in to disble this ad
I don't know how widespread the term is but i think that it's, by far, the coolest genre title ever created so i'm gonna use it. And while it may not be all that descriptive it's a lot easier to type out and pronounce than what other may label.

DJENT! - for those of you who don't know...

I guess you could say Meshuggah pioneered the style (i think) and so far i know of 3 others that could fall into the same category but i'm looking for more. It has a heaviness that, in my opinion, has never been approached in metal before and a like it. The atmospheric synth and pad sounds that the bands seem to share in contrast to the heaviness of guitar makes for a really cool and unique dynamic. And though you can hear obvious similarities between each group they each possess something that makes them very different from one another. It's hard to explain and it's much more easily understood when listened to, but it's a rare sort of variation you don't get within a lot of genres nowadays. You can hear influences but there really is no "archetype" to speak of and that includes Meshuggah. Anyway here are the bands i've found so far:

Tesseract
Synthetic Breed
Bulb/Periphery

Chugga Chugga? Or is that hardcore? I think Chugga Chugga is metal, but Chug Chug dat da WEEE dow Chug Ghuggada dat da WEEE dow is pretty hardcore... you know, if you throw a few X's in there somewhere.

I've never actually even head the word djent used except associated with Periphery, but I suppose they are pretty similar to Meshuggah in many ways.

It doesn't sound as cool but it would've created so much onomatopoeia either ;p

Aha!! I knew I made a a thread about this! Anyway, it seems that this style of music is becoming more and more popular and I've found two awesome bands that I can squeeze into the genre that I wanted to let people know about. Of course, I'm still open to and looking for suggestions of similar groups to listen to .

Karnivool more Prog than Djent but I really wanted them in here, lol.

&

Animals As Leaders

here's another though: Xerath

I thought the guitarist from periphery coined that term as well.

I bought Destroy Erase Improve by Meshuggah and was surprised how prog / jazz rock it was in certain songs. The guitarist had a heavy Allan Holdsworth thing going on back then.

I would suggest it to anyone trying to see what the band is about, but maybe not a big metal fan. Certainly an experimental lp for them.

Any Holdsworth fans check this out-

To revive an old thread, the website got-djent.com has hundreds of bands now, and the djent scene(whether you like it or not, it's a genre now) is flourishing
