Wow, I accidentally ran across this old thread and saw my name. Yes, Hotcakes was a hellava band in the 70's and 80's and we are still going strong today doing 150-160 dates a year. I played that old String Ray for over 20 years but have been playing a F Jazz for the last 5. Two weeks ago picked up the Ray again and realized why it's such a boss instrument. Nothing can match that deep "Ray tone".

Pretty sure he used a Sting Ray for a lot of his recordings (as well as live).

Zombie thread! Just heard this tune yesterday, and forgot how much Nate Watts killed it.

According to this BP article, he did use a stingray to record it.

Naaaaaaaaaasty funky playing.

Nathan played a Stingray on "Do I do?". There's no synth bass.

I learnt this when I was 16, and I've NEVER been able to get a band to play it.

Badass is correct sir - Nate's bass playing has so much attitude and power on that song. The tone blows me away - it's so punchy and grindy.
