I don't think so, at least not in that song. Guitar and drums are leaving a lot of open space, and the bass is filling it nicely. It gives the song a bit of movement.

No way. The amount you play is perfect in that song. I'm in agreement with Frank for sure....without your bass there would be a lot of open space. Great job.

I agree with the above posts. You play what needs to be played

I don't think you overplay, at least not on that song. I think you sound good! But maybe what they want is more repetition? Like, maybe they want you to find the 'golden bass line' and stick to it. Maybe try it both ways and see how it goes?

I seriously don't think so.

I don't think so at all, you have a nice groove and serve the song well, just what is needed.

I don't think so either, you're keeping the song kicking along nicely.

If you need to pull back, you should tell your drummer he needs to do the same, see how he likes it!

No way, I think the song sounds fine how it is. It would be boring with less motion in the bass since there's just two chords in the verses. If anything the drummer was overplaying a little during the solo...

i think not.

i think the problem is that too many modern musicians (guitarist especially) have trouble accepting the bass as a melodic instrument. they want it to be rhythm only, all while claiming Led Zeppelin, Elton John, and Joe Cocker as influences. irony much?

(yes, maybe i'm projecting some of my current frustrations onto your problem. maybe. but take what's relevant to you, and leave the rest. i just needed to vent a bit)

That line is perfect for that song. There are times when I hear you hitting higher octave notes but if that's what they're talking about then they're clueless. Very tasteful IMO and it worked great.

In other words, +1 to everything else said so far. Did I overtype?

Your bassline, as many have noted, adds a lot of much-needed movement. However, if I can offer any advice, you seem to be doing the same basic type groove for the verse, bridge and chorus sections.

If you simplify the verse somewhat, that would help the bridge build a little more and then carry that into the chorus. So then when you have that break and bring it back down, it actually goes somewhere. As it sits, the guitarist is doing this by himself. Bringing you and the drummer onboard to help build the song will only make it better.

I think you're laying down a nice groove that gives the song some definition. Sounds great.

I think you could make it busier!

Yeah, I definitely have a tendency to overplay at times.

Seriously, good grooves, don't change your lines!

I think you're laying down a very nice jam line. Totally supports the song.

I like some of the advice/suggestions Bad Monkey (#16) had to offer,
but your playing is right on for the style of the song. Very enjoyable!

Cringe factor = 0!
