So our CD has been out for a few months. I've showed it to a lot of my old friends living elsewhere. One comment I get a lot is something to the effect of "the vocals make me want to kill myself" or "he needs to learn how to sing." I've heard good stuff about the album regarding the rest of the band, but never anything positive about the vocals or the lyrics.
We are recording again and the guitarist and I (who lead the studio stuff) want to see if we can coach him into doing things a little better this time around.
Give it a listen if you can bear it and let me know what you think! www.myspace.com/leftbrainmusic

arisen - like it. sounds a bit like tool. love the sound of your bass in the song.
persephone - his voice sounds like it's 'underneath' the band. doesn't sound bad - maybe just needs to come up a little.
haven't listened to the last song yet.

I'd start looking for a new one QUICK! Y'all got some pretty sweet tunes and from where I'm sitting, the only thing holding ya back is his whining.

The vocals are mediocre emo-like screaming thing. If you go heavy, get a real death metal vocalist.

Arisen-Spoken word part is ok, and the soft singing is ok, but the bridge he sounds like he's straining too much.
Overall the music sounds good, is it possible to boost his vocals so he doesn't strain so much? |

like he's not amazing, but at least he has his own voice. if there's one thing i dont like it's singers who mimic others or over sing.
ps...i like your tone

Some of it sounded a little pitchy. If you like the dude and the lyrics (I assume he writes them), then see if he'll take some lessons or at least get a self help DVD.
And I dug the bass tone as well.

ps...i like your tone | Call me ignorant, but he sounds like every other screaming/death metal singer I've ever heard. |

| | | | Yeah you guys have some pretty awesome music. I love how the bass cuts through.
The vocals do bring it down a little I think. Maybe I'm biased, but I hate emocore whine/screams. The clean vocals sound like an emo version of Bruce Dickinson.
It sounds like he could pull off a decent low death metal growl though. I suppose you could try that. |

If you guys have tight chemistry and get along great, I'd suggest AGAINST replacing him. He's not bad, per se, and if you replace any member, you run the risk of losing the band chemistry. If there may be tension there or whatever, then perhaps. But again, I don;t think he's bad. I don;t think he's killer either, but he holds his own.
Great tunes, regardless!

Nice bass tones.
The music could really go places with a dynamic singer. |

| | | | I agree that he needs some things to be sorted..I know how it feels man my band has the same exact problem..though my music is totaly different than yours my singer persists on screaming to the point of sensless on some of our songs and I cant stand that ..If you like him and feel he can take the criticism constructively than work with him, but if not you may end up losing interest in the whole thing all together..Thats what happend to me. Musically you guys are tight and diverese dont let the vocals take that away from all the hard work you put into it. |

The singer, while not absolutely a train wreck, is the weakest part of the group.
The production on the vocals could have helped a great deal (but didn't)
The overall feel of the songs is GREAT!
Your logo is painfully hard to read.

Definitely dig your bass tone, did you mic you 400+ or is that the sansamp or did you use something else?
More about the singer... He's inconsistant, doesn't have that wide of a range, and the production quality of his vocals doesn't seem to be the same as the rest of the band in the recording.
If you really like him or would have a hard time finding a new singer, I'd suggest some vocal lessons or training as well as listening to some good influences or getting some help with flow.
