Donald Fagen's solo material

As discussed, funnily enough, in the Booker T thread.

I'm a huge fan of Steely Dan. So much so, that I sometimes forget just how great Fagen's stuff is when released as "solo" material.

These three tracks are right up there with Steely Dan's best stuff, I think. Enjoy...

Donald Fagen New Frontier (HQ) - YouTube

Donald Fagen I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World) (HQ) - YouTube

Not to knock his creative capabilities,AT ALL!!! But,his solo stuff sounds sounds soooo much like Steely Dan,that it sounds like tracks that simply didn't make it to one of their CD's. I don't mean that these sound "2nd rate" by not making' it to a Steely album, either.

I did no search. Who laid the bass tracks?

The credits on the Nightfly album list Abe Laboriel, Marcus Miller, Chuck Rainey, Will Lee and Anthony Jackson. Not a bad bunch of dudes to get to play bass for you, then!

bass12, thanks for the Kamakiriad tracks. I absolutely love "Snowbound".

The Nightfly is a great piece of work, great performances, great songs. I like all the tracks but the two personal preferences for both songwriting, bass playing and tone are the two cuts Marcus played on incidentally, The Nightfly and Maxine.

Like Snowbound, I really like that laid-back thumb line, great way of using that sound and presence in a relaxed way.

My contribution: An example how utilization of space can groove so well.
B.
Mary Shut the Garden Door - Donald Fagen (HQ audio)
EDIT: That's Freddie Washington on bass. I saw him play P-Bass thru an Aggie 750 w/Steely Dan this past summer in Toronto.

Fagan's Nightfly is my favorite steely Dan album.

Well maybe Aja is...

What, nothing from Morph The Cat?

More of the same cool grooves from Fagan on this one. Faves are the title track, "Bright Nightgown" and "Security Joan". Totally diggin the backing vocal girl group on "What I Do".

Kamakiriad is the closest to a missing Steely Dan disc since Walter Becker produced it and plays some bass and lead guitar on it.

I've always liked Becker's bass playing although it seems to get overshadowed by his lead work.

The Nightfly is a great album but I wish it had more low end. It's such a crisp clear sound but is totally thin in the bottom.

Morph the Cat is my favorite production wise. It has the crispness but with the deep low end too.

I like Becker's lines. Most Steely Dan is either him or Chuck Rainey; either way, it's smooth as silk. Big influence on me personally.

Nightfly is a great album but I'm not a fan of the production.... much thinner and colder than a lot of the later Dan records.

Some of my favorite music EVER listed here!
One last one, Will Lee's work on "Walk Between The Raindrops." I've always wanted to play this tune; I think I could nail it!

great thread ... I love all the albums and tunes mentioned. In addition, Becker's "11 Tracks of Whack" is underrated. Perhaps deservedly so ... lyrically it is very dark and depressing. However, musically I think it's very inventive.

I also agree with those who say Becker's bass playing is underrated. While Rainey and many other great session men have played with the Dan and on their solo albums, Becker is very solid and creates what in my view are excellent lines with just the right amount of space in them. For example:

"Jack of Speed" from "Two Against Nature" ==> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WlKwb6Ds3M

Played that one in a band about 25 years ago. Doubt I came anywhere close to nailing it, but it sure was a fun tune to play.

Back when The Nightfly was released...
I recall a lot of us thinking the exact same thing.
There was a serious lull between Aja & The Nightfly. Those of us jones-ing for anything related to Steely Dan sopped up Fagen's 1st solo disc (& made us wonder what the heck Becker had to do with the SD sound).

A couple of other releases in that time frame that used the same session musicians & Gary Katz-
Eye To Eye's debut album
Also, vocalist Rosie Velas's debut, IIRC. I believe this was Gary Katz-produced with the sessioneers used by Fagen/Becker.

That's not my recollection at all.
Then again, my recollection is from the LP...Jackson's bass on "I.G.Y." & "Ruby Baby" sounded pretty damn fat...IIRC.

I have the cd, too. May need to revisit...I do know many cds I have do not sound as good as the LP.
Cleaner? Yes.
More sterile at times? Yes.

Walter plays bass on the whole "Everything Must Go" album. I enjoy playing 6 of those songs & although I honour the bass lines quite closely, I think it's futile to accurately nail the feel that this guy has in his bass playing, nor would I wish to. It's HIS feel, not mine. He's such a great all round musician as is Donald. Don't kid yourself people, BOTH of them are the Dan!!!

It's mostly the drums that I dislike.... they were heavy into their "Wendel" period where they were quantizing the crap out of all the tracks.
