I'm wondering if those noisy pops got all screwed up during the compression. I'm going to tweak with it a little tonight. See what I can do. I might hit you up and send you the loop. Would you want it to be the length of the track or would just a few passes through the loop suffice?
So based upon what I've read here today, the vinyl pops and clicks are just a little too dirty and noisy. Is that the general consensus? | i love everything about that track.....the music, the instruments, the vibe, the groove, and the intentional dirty clicks and pops. awesome.

I think I'm gonna leave it alone and then mess with it again after I've recorded our DJ. At that point we'll both go over it and see what we can do. |

Interesting story. I met the guitarist that tours with Easy Star All Stars on the way to Vegas. He was wearing an Easy Star All Stars shirt, and I asked him where he got it. We instantly started talking about reggae and he was cool enough to take my demo from my old band. He hit back my band on myspace with a big up, and said he'd keep us in mind if they swung through and needed an opener band. (Nothing ever happened, of course) but he didn't need to do that. Cool dude.

Tons of meat and plenty of gravy for the DJ to Dub.
Personally, I hate clicking and popping on a recording; one of the great joys for me of so many of the old tracks being remastered and re-released is hearing how good and clean the original masters could be, and your sounds are awesome and should be heard in their glory. Just an aesthetic opinion, I can see what you are going for, but the idea might work better if you were going for more of an antique lo-fi sound in general on a '60s style track and not on a clean pumping early '80s style stepper. Here instead of warmth it just seems like a well recorded album that has been played to death, IMO.
The bubbling organ is just right in the mix- it shouldn't be heard too clearly and instead just adds counter-rhythmic goodness and texture.
My favorite version is the first- with a drop of the highest frequencies on the hi-hat filtered it will be just right, I think.
One major thing on all the versions: the bass drum is way too thumpy and moves too much air. If you clean and tighten it up a bit it won't run over the bass as it is now. At first I thought the bass was mixed a tad too low, but it's the bass drum that is obscuring that great line. On a Sound System that drum will run over everything (it does on my both my Sennheiser and Grado headphones): cleaner it will still pump like mad and let all the other instruments breathe much more.
I love the track, the sounds of all the instruments, the bass (rich, textured, punchy, clear and deep, real sweet), and the interaction between them. There is enough in there for a thousand dub mixes!

Perhaps a little bass reduction on the track, and or some compression. Thanks for the listen. |

A little too uptempo for my taste, but I can see a lot of possibilities for your DJ, and after all, that's the whole point.
You can also put me firmly in the camp that thinks the clicks and pops add to the vibe. |
