Download George Smed Full CD’s

Here are all my cd's for download. These are the complete cd's in zip file mp3 format. Please enjoy and critique as desired. Any questions please feel free to ask. Be patient as I am adding links as I finish compiling files.

Laughing Pumpkin Vol I (1988): I recorded these songs using the old tape to tape method. Mostly guitar. These are my very first experiments with writing and multi tracking. I play all the instruments and drum machine programming.

Laughing Pumpkin Vol II (1992): This is the continuation of high school and a few years right out of high school.

LID (The band's live performances)(1993 to 1996): This is the 3 piece dream band I was in. I hope to one day get the three of us together to record some studio perfect cd's. George Smed - Bass and Lead Vocals, Bil Shannon - Guitar and Vocals, Tim O'niell - Drums. These are live recordings from practice, shows and radio performances.

Hot Noodles (1999): My first try at digital computer recording. This basically LID without guitar and some of my solo pieces with drums. The only over dubs are vocals. Recorded live in my basement

Ossia (AKA- Funkin' Donuts)(2001): A four piece band I was in and we all eventually ended up living in the same house and building a recording studio in the basement. Marty Evans - Vocals, Todd Mason - Guitar, Chad Robbins - Drums, George Smed - Bass

Hey, just checking out the solo bass stuff. Volume 2 is very nice mate. Well played and well recorded. Just a few observations:

1. learn how to encode mp3 properly - nearly all files had ID tag data missing. A bit annoying if your trying to find specific work with out titles etc. Especially as you've offered up a lot of free music, it's a bit time consuming to reedit the tags. Okay I know it's free - but still

2. Some of the tunes start immediately. And I mean immediately. Maybe a few seconds silence before a track begins will help some of the compositions breathe more and will help the flow of the album better. Did you know that all ECM albums have 5 seconds of silence at the beginning of all their releases?

Apart from that - bloody good stuff. I'll be listening intently.

Thanks man
When I put the cd's together I do pay alot of attention to order and space between songs. Takes days sometimes before I'm happy with the song order. When I ripped them the order went out the window. Are all the song titles coming up or is it just a track number? Yes I'm a lazy MP3er.

I think I've got the whole tag thing under control now. I'm going through them all and tagging them.

Thanks for the heads up.

Invest in iTunes mate, it's free and works properly. Plus you can embed album artwork etc. Support for both Windows as well as MacOS is very good, with regular updates and enhancements. You could actually get these releases on thr itunes store. That might be worth considering.

How did you manage to get such a lovely deep bass tone, full of clarity and depth for your recordings? Particularly for the 2 solo bass projects.

All you hear is my 1994 (Vol I) 1999 (Vol II) Ibanez SR800 running directly into my computer. I add a little reverb and use a little compressor/limiter plug in on that one for mastering. I use SoundForge 4.5 for all my solo bass recording and ACID for multi track. No post eq-ing at all. I believe it's the way I have my pick ups adjusted. I had to take them out and shim them myself. I use the split coil and bridge humbucker together. Adjust my pick ups as my eq rather than trying to force an amp to do the tone adjusting. I've been able to plug into any amp and still get a nice clean sound. They are stock Ibanez that came with the bass. I've been experimenting with my bass sound since I started playing. I'm searching for a sound that is distinctive unlike anyone else. Other than that I always play and record pretty dry and direct. Trying to get a well rounded tone where the bottom notes don't over power the mids and highs. I also have a pretty bad hearing problem. I have a really hard time understanding words when people talk to me but I can zero in on tones and sound colors.
