Dream Within a Dream - Solo Acoustic Bass Video

Sign in to disble this ad
This is a song I've been writing called "Dream Within a Dream" (inspired by the Edgar Allen Poe poem). Played on my Kinal Kompact 6-string Acoustic bass guitar, recorded with a blend of the piezos, and two microphones. A condenser mic in front of the soundhole, and the Highlander internal mic. Along with a little reverb and chorus.

It's a little clanky because of the strumming style and my low-tension strings, tough to get a good recorded tone, but I think it turned out ok.

Also, this will be the 2nd full-length solo song I've written for bass. I wouldn't call writing one of my strong points, but I'm trying to work on it more, and hopefully work up some material for some sort of solo album in early 2009

So let me know what you think, and enjoy!

Very cool eerie song. Reminds me of some of Opeth softer material.

Cool. I don't listen to much Opeth, but "Patterns In the Ivy II" is an amazing song

I like the opening as well. There are some abrupt.. switches (I don't know the proper english term, the change of melody) Overall I don't think it's powerful enough to be a solo, but it's eerie and fits the subject. I think it'd be pretty nice with a synth guitar, vocals and drums with brush.

Though, more than the piece, I envied your fingers. :| Short and chubby fingers are not very good for this kind of work.

Thanks for the feedback. The abrupt switches (that term works for me ) are intentional. The concept is that the piece moves around a lot, changing keys while keeping a sort of elusive, underlying melodic pattern. Like a Dream Within a Dream, nothing is set in stone. Lots of little ideas that are never fully developed, constantly fleeting...that's the idea anyways.

Someone else just mentioned Opeth in my youtube comments too. Their Blackwater album is now on my list of albums to get next payday

Time for a bump

Somewhat off-subject, but I finally ordered a custom fitted leather gigbag for this bass from Glenn Cronkhite. And then a flight case (where the whole gigbag goes inside) for it will be coming soon as well. Can't wait!

I liked it but I'd almost rather hear it arranged on an acoustic guitar. Not too much that's "bassy" about it. Maybe it's the tuning your in or the tone but it just doesn't stand out as a solo bass song to me, more of a Opeth intro or interlude. I could actually imagine Akerfeldt singing on it.
