Dual bass bands

Sign in to disble this ad
We've done lots of drum and bass band threads before.

How about dual bass (as in, no guitar) bands.
So, like, not Ned's Atomic Dustbin.

There probably won't be very many.

The Cure used to use 2 basses. Can't think of song titles off the top of my head though. It's been a long time since I listened to any Cure.

I'm trying to form one with my college friends. But alas, their commitment is far from what we can say as productive. It's fun as hell, though.

The Levin/Gunn King Crimson qualifies in my book.

Ornette Coleman has been using two basses on and off since his Prime Time band in the mid 70s.

He was doing that much earlier too, circa Free Jazz. No guitars in that band either.

Then there were some cool Pharoah Sanders sides with Stanley Clarke and Cecil McBee both on upright, and no guitars to be seen.

Sun Ra used two basses and no guitars at both the shows I saw him play too.

All very true. Somehow none of that came to mind when I posted.

Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society used two bassists in their early lineups (late 70's to mid 80's)

Victa tours with two bassists ( not with Bela) , he up front, and Ant "Flex" Wellington backin it up. Me, I dig Ant's thumpin' in the back!

Well, none of those bands I mentioned used BG though, save Sun Ra who used one BG and one URB. I can think of a fair number of bands with guitar and two bassists playing BG though. Of those, the mid-80s version of Prime Time was probably my favorite, but none of the recordings I've heard measure up to the live experience.

I saw P-Funk with three bass players, mostly slamming the same parts. Sounded HUGE.
