Duane Allman Retrospective 7 CD Box set to be released

January 25, 2013

Duane Allman, one of rock's all-time greats, will get a fitting tribute to his legacy on March 5th when Rounder Records releases a comprehensive seven-disc box set. Curated and produced by Bill Levenson and Allman's daughter Galadrielle, Skydog: The Duane Allman Retrospective spans the guitarist's too-short career.

The 129-song compilation featuring recordings from Allman's early garage-rock days in the Allman Joys, the Escorts and the Hour Glass; studio sessions with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, Clarence Carter and more; and, of course, selections from the Allman Brothers Band and his work with Derek and the Dominoes.

The collection features liner notes from Rolling Stone's Alt-Rock-A-Rama author Scott Schinder, plus additional notes from Galadrielle Allman. The Allman Brothers had begun recording Eat a Peach, the follow-up to their classic At Fillmore East, shortly before Duane Allman died in a motorcycle crash on October 29th, 1971. He was 24.

Duane Allman was arguable, hands down, one of Americas most fluent guitarists covering all kinds of styles including Blues, Jazz Rock and acoustic. His slide work is a staple in popular musics history.

Sounds like an interesting, but expensive collection of music with a nice touch of notes by his daughter. Bless this family. Its something to look forward to. Thanks for the post Richland.

Back in the day, the Duane Allman Anthology was available-

Many times I held this double LP in my hands...never pulled the trigger to buy it, though.

Pickett's "Hey Jude" should be a Classic!

Galadrielle? Nice to know Tolkien was being read in the '60s.

I never heard this before. I'm not much of a fan of The Beatles version of Hey Jude but this sure is a soulful twist on the song without all the Na-Na's at the end.

glad to see Duane still getting the due he deserves. Apparently he was also very well read according to Gregg in his recent memoir.

This was Clapton's first glimpse of Duane Allman. Someone (Tom Dowd? Jerry Wexler? Ahmet Ertegun? not sure...) played the song over the phone to Clapton, and Clapton immediately asked the name of the guitarist. This led up to their famous meeting in Miami, and Clapton's invitation to Duane to contribute to "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs."

Duane Allman was a phenomenal artist.
