pretty cool version . . . did you leave out some of the notes in the 3rd (and 6th) phrase on purpose?

Well ha now that you mentioned it I did. I was doing it from memory after you said that I opened up the book and saw that I did forget those two notes. So I guess I did it on by accident. But thank you for pointing that out I would have gone around the rest of my life playing it like that.

I learned "Freedom Jazz Dance" in early '67 after hearing it on the "Miles Smiles" LP . . .
You seem to have the 1st phrase pretty much OK . . .
F Bb Eb G C F D Bb F C Bb Eb Ab Db Bb

but the 2nd phrase is
Bb F C Db Ab Eb Bb Db Ab Eb Bb F

and the 3rd phrase is
Eb Ab F Bb Eb Db F# B E D G C F Bb B F# C# C F Bb F Eb Ab Db Gb G Db Bb Ab Bb highBb

One of the interesting things about this melody is that it's the first use (that I had heard) of so many fourths intervals . . .

Thanks Deaf pea this does sound much better. I learned for the old real book (before it was somewhat legit) alot of the melodies in it are messed up cause I think it was just this guys transcriptions of the songs so alot of chords and melodies are off. The version I have is not to different from the one you gave me but the notes that are different do change the sound alot. Also this song is so many fourths that is one of the reasons I dig it. It can be a really funky tune and with the sounds of the fourths makes it even better. My friend here and school really got me into the fourths sound, he was learn a bunch of Herbie and chick on the piano. It kinda just stuck with me I guess ha.

DEAF - have you heard the out takes/rehearsal takes for MS? Hearing Miles work this out with Herbie, Wayne and Ron is pretty much fun.

Very cool version, nice tone and playing!

Here's a version of "Freedom Jazz Dance"
with Jaco Pastorius from Live In New York Vol. 4.
It was recorded in 1985, and his solos
from this period often contained a lot
of his clichè-licks. The solo in this tune is
no exception. His playing is still very good though.
Also worth noting is that they start playing
"Donna Lee" about halfway into the song.
It's in MP3:
