Is this Iron Maiden in disguise playing slightly heavier Iron Maiden?
I heard one song from Edguy on snakenet this AM. Even the logo looks like Iron Maiden in a way, aside from the obvious "Ed" thing.
Anyway, fill in my ignorance with facts. I ask because the song was pretty good, maybe a little cheese, but not too shabby.

Groups like Blind Guardian, Helloween, Symphony X, Gamma Ray, Rhapsody and a host of others are all part of that kind of epic metal genre that Iron Maiden was a prototype for. It can get really cheesy and bombastic at times, but if not taken too seriously, I think it is a load of fun.
I have not really tried Edguy however. Can anyone recommend a good first album?

All power metal likely owes some influence to Iron Maiden, but there are also major departures like more use of keyboards and double-kick drums, which Nico McBrain refuses to use. It also tends to go for high-fantasy themes, whereas Maiden goes for historical subject matter.

I would like to say that all of the "power metal" bands are quite the same deal, epic things and stuff, itīs really boring. Odd thing is that the majority of these bands come from Germany.
Though everybody calls them Power metal this term IMO is wrongly used. Power Metal are bands such as Pantera (Early Years) Jag Panzer and Grim Reaper
As a friend of mine says Stratovarius, Blind Guardian etc are part of the "Hobbit" Metal Genre |

I've been listening to it for quite awhile now and have not gotten bored yet. Granted, only a few Symphony X tunes get played be me anymore, but that hardly renders an entire genre boring.

I don't think its a deliberate Maiden reference... to my ear they're just a fairly average euro-metal band with a bit more tongue in their cheeks. They put on a really good show.

I stumbled across Helloween a while back but never really pursued them. Heard a song yesterday at my buddy's place and I dig it, and think I'll check them out. Was wondering other than the bands listed if there's any other ones definitely worth looking into? |
