Editing noisy recordings

I had a bit of a noisy distortion pedal during a recording i was making and now i need to reduce the noise level, Is this possible with a gate or similar device?

The protools boards are not much help gah...

Bump.

I ended up using a multi effects distortion that was not as noisy. Good sound in causes good sound out i suppose.

would be nice to know more mixing/mastering tips however, Anyone know of some helpful sites?
