Essential 60s song listening.

Sign in to disble this ad
I find myself these days going further and further back into the past and listening to a lot of really old music.

I love some 60s tracks, but I'm wondering whether TB could help me break into 60s music.

What would TB consider ESSENTIAL listening? I love pretty much anything with a bassline, but am more of a rock fan than anything else.

Any suggestions appreciated!

I'll go beyond the obvious, Beatles, Stones, Who (not my favorite 60's band, but maybe favorite bass player).

For simple, infectious lines, try the Zombies, Tells her no, She's not there, and if you wannt to get obscure, try almost anything from there last album, Odessey and Oracle.

Listen to the Yardbirds for some good blues/rock rave ups.

The Animals catalog is very good, from the bues standards to House of the Rising Son, We've Gotta Get Outa This Place, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood etc...

Here's a list of fun stuff, almost one hit wonders, that really rocked:

I Want Candy- The Strangeloves
Codine-The Charlattans
Get Me To The World On Time- The Electric Prunes
Talk Talk- The Music Machine
Dirty Water-The Standels
Primitive-The Groupies
Porpise Mouth-Country Joe and the Fish
Double Shot of My Babies Love-The Swingin' medallions
Run, Run, Run- The Third Rail
Sweet Young Thing-Chocolate Watch Band
Beg, Borrow and Steal-The Rare breed
I Had To Much To dream Last Night-Thirteenth Floor Elevator
Laugh Laugh-The Beau Brumell

Don't Forget The Mamas and Papas song book, Early Airplane, Quick Silver Messanger Service, especialy "Fresh Air"

Capt. Beefheart (BTW They'll be in the UK and Scotland in December) Diddy Wah Diddy, Electricity, etc...

That should start you off.

To focus in on the bass, and more obvious bands:
Jack Bruce was a fantastic player for Cream - and provided most of the vocals.
John Paul Jones gave us all the memorable bass lines for Led Zeppelin.
Though I'm not a Who fan, I like John Entwhistle's lines on "My Generation."

If you want obscure, pick up these Rhino compilations:
Nuggets: Classics from the Psychedelic Sixties
and the four-album set:
Nuggets II: Original Artifacts from the British Empire and Beyond 1964-1969

On Nuggets you'll find "Friday On My Mind" by the Easybeats. I can never get enough of that frantic bass interval.

Doing Paul McCartney's bassline on "A Day In The Life" note-for-note was pretty fun!

i found that going back to the guys that influenced the early rock, brit invasion was a real education....from doo wop to blues, texas swing, country, new orleans...when i started to note that a lot of sixties stuff was written in the fifties and earlier it led to a lot of great stuff

I don't know that I have tried Nowhere Man....I have al the original albums so I'll have to work that one out. Might be a project for a Sunday, do the tab and transcription for another Beatles tune. Had to check, I have enough beer so its a go!

It depends on what you're into. Early 60s is more Soul and Skiffle type stuff. But by the late 60's, we had Psychedelic, the beginnings of Hard Rock, Prog rock, Funk, Metal, and all sorts of stuff.
That said, instead of listing essential songs, I'm just going to mention some bands (sorry for repeats):
James Brown
The Kinks
Nazz
Ten Years After
Aretha Franklin
Beach Boys
Cream
The Who
The Beatles
Black Sabbath (their 1st single was released in late 1969)
Moby Grape
The Amboy Dukes
Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Doors
The Small Faces
The Guess Who
Steppenwolf
Iron Butterfly
Jeff Beck
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
The James Gang
Lovin' Spoonful
Yes
The Velvet Underground
The Rolling Stones
Elvis
Roy Orbison
Steve Miller Band
Pink Floyd
Taj Mahal
T.Rex

The 60s

I consider mysef a true product of the 60s and early 70s.

I remember all the great music and playing it in bands.

I think it's great that you want to move in this direction.I think alot of cats are.

All that music, to me, it was groovy back then and still groovy today.

BTW, I'm trying to bring back the term "groovy" And it ain't workin at all.

Graham Bond Organization
