My favorite Anthony Jackson was the stuff he played on Chaka Khan's first three solo CDs: Chaka; Naughty: What 'Cha Gonna Do For Me. Those CDs also feature great work by Will Lee, Marcus Miller, Abraham Laboriel, Willie Weeks, and Chaka's brother ---- Stevens.

Essential Anthony Jackson? Lots to choose from there.

There are a number of CDs with:

Steve Khan - The three initial Eyewitness CDs Blades/ModernTimes, Casa Loco, and Eyewitness (on these Steve Jordan is the drummer). He also played on Public Access,( w Weckl on drums). Headline (half Jackson/Chambers half Ron Carter). Crossings (Chambers on drums). Suitcase (Chambers on drums), and just recently Parting Shot (Chambers on drums, with three percussionists).

Michel Petrucciani - Trio w/ Gadd on drums, which I really like.

Michel Camillo - a trio format,(originally Weckl, later Hernandez). There are a number of CDs with Michel. All worth getting.

There are some recordings with the NYC gang Gadd/Jackson/Gale/Tee/MacDonald. I think Anthony calls this the Pendarvis section, because Leon Pendarvis used them on sessions. You can hear this truly exceptional collection of talent on a variety of things: A live Grover Washington Jr. video, a Quincy Jones CD - Sounds 'n Stuff Like That (an absolutely killer disco title track, w. Chaka on vocals), the Concert in the Park with Simon and Garfunkle (not the entire section, Gadd/Tee/Jackson only).

If you find Anthony paired with any great drummer (Gadd/Chambers/Weckl) and you will have a special treat, because he is able to lock in something fierce.

He also appears with Lee Ritenour, Chick Corea, Steely Dan and a variety of other places. All worth checking out.

I'm sure there's more that I'm not thinking of. He has done a lot.

Bumping an old thread rather than starting a new one. I'm on Talkbass about once a quarter now, rather than every 14 seconds as I was from 2004 to 2010. Perhaps that's because I found a bass with which I'm exceedingly satisfied. Maybe it's because my wife and I began to crank out children in 2007 with alarming frequency.

Whatever the reason(s), I have had a bit o' wine this fine evening, and have been listening to some iPod mix action. I.G.Y. came on and I was admiring the beauty of AJ's bass playing (I'm assuming it's he due to the signature tastiness... if not, please don't tell me, I'd rather be in the dark).

For me, it's what he adds to tunes like this, "Glamour Profession" and "Time Out of Mind," (again, assuming that's AJ due to style), not to mention the Chaka numbers mentioned already. His passion for his craft is as compelling as the parts he creates. And his personality is always entertaining.

"I.G.Y." & "Glamour Profession" do have similar approaches (big lesson in playing across the barline).
"Time Out Of Mind", IIRC, Is Walter Becker. I think AJ only plays on 2 of the Gaucho tracks..."My Rival" + "Glamour Profession".
From The Nightfly, it is Jackon on "I.G.Y." + "Ruby Baby".

Agree with everything mentioned (hard to beat the Chaka Khan/Steve Khan stuff)...though from an '80s issue of Guitar Player (Fripp is on the cover & contains a lenghty interview with AJ), Jackson mentions the title track from Eric Gale's Ginseng Woman as one of his personal favourites.

There is also some standout "Pop" stuff from Quincy Jones' Sounds & Stuff Like That!!

AJ with Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez is a good match, too (Michel Camilo).

I would say if you are only going to get one album to start with Steve Khan's The Suitcase. You can hear AJ playing the best tunes from their catalog AND there are 2 killer bass solos.

If you want a video ABSOLUTELY get the Hiromi Live in Marciac. AJ right now doing all his stuff. Pick- Fingers- Thumb w/palm mute- Volume pedal. Some great close up footage also.

Several people have mentioned the Calle 54 with Michel Camilo and El Negro, but I prefer the album One More Once with Michel Camilo and a big horn section. This album is caliente!

I recall a number of guys that are old enough to have heard/seen AJ play a Gibson back in the day, during his Buddy Rich tenure, IIRC.
