The Mark Adams thread in 'Bassists' got me to thinking about compiling an essential slap bass recording compilation. Can all the funkheads (and others ) give me a roll call on some essential slap bass recordings that you would consider timeless and influential(or just flat out freaky)? I'm talking 70's, 80's funk & soul recordings! Mark King and Flea joints are acceptable

| | | Pow and Hair and couple of others by Graham Central Station. Can't go wrong with a little Larry Graham when we're talking 'bout slapping (or rather thumping ).
Thank You (Falettinme be mice elf again) by Sly & The Family Stone is also a must have for me.
Check out Cholly from "One Nation under a groove" by Funkadelic if you want some p-funk with your slap.
"You can call me Al" by Paul Simon is also an all-time favorite. Bakithi Kumalo smokes up this one slapping his fretless like there's no tomorrow.
"You're the Sweetest one" by Luther Vandross has a Marcus Miller line that you just want to give a big hug.
On a totally different noteis Nick Beggs' cool line from Kajagoogoo's "Too shy".
That'll be all for now.

"Lopsy Lu"-Stanley Clarke
"Thunder Thumbs & Lightning Licks" and "Stomp"-Brothers Johnson
I also like Luther's "Never Too Much".
Slapped 'solo'/breaks-
"Boogie Oogie Oogie"-A Taste of Honey
"Car Wash"-Rose Royce
"Get Off"-Foxey?
(Did I say that out loud?).

| Actually thats a studio trick, Baghithi played the first phrase (the descending riff) which was then cut, copied and reversed to finish out the solo....also there's a lot of double tracking going on there ..Paul Simon himself is playing a 5er on this track, a better example would be the Live in central park version where Armand Sabal Leco(sp) tears up the solo in that tune.

Bob Ohlsson, former Motown 'super' engineer.....the man responsible for THAT sound.

But I wasn't talking specifically about the solo. The verse part is slapped as well. Also, if you want the real thing, check out Bakithi doing the solo live on "Graceland: The African Concert" which features the rhythm section from the Graceland album. And Paul Simon is actually credited playing six-string electric bass . I'm not sure what part he's playing though. Maybe he's playing one of those baritone guitars which sound nothing like bass. 'Cause every bass part on the recording sounds like it's Bakithi on his fretless.

But Sly and the family stone, came around me recently (the family stone exp. or something stupid like that- no sly). And they played that higher song, i don't recall the name, all I know is i kept getting it confused with that stupid Creed song. But the bassist went into this super phat bass slap pop thing. Holy crap.... that guy has some chops.
Anyway- when get that list finished up- if you could throw me a pm with it, i'd love to check out some of that stuff. |

When I think of funk, I'm thinking about the good ole 70 and 80's raw uncut funk. | Well, I included them because they have influenced a lot of cats to become bassists or become better bassists. They both also have lines or licks that a lot of bassist have copped. and both of them are obviously influenced by the 70's and 80's funk bass greats. Just my opinion. |
